new finds: ladies edition

Friday, April 5th, 2013

i’ve been thinking about this post for a little while – a few months even – wanting to share some of the things i have been discovering lately. but it took a different turn recently when i gave a talk at creative mornings. once i had finished there was question time, and someone asked me who were my biggest influences. every one i could think of on the spot was a male. this felt a little hypocritical, particularly after talking about the subconscious struggle i had had in a male-dominated industry.

i did have, and still do have, a lot of female influences, but at that moment my mind went blank (which is not a rare occurence to be honest). so i thought i would dedicate this “new finds” to the laides.  here are my top favourite new finds – the ladies version:

1. collier campbell. these two english sisters have been working since the 1960’s, and for the likes of liberty and yves saint laurent, but it wasn’t until i came across their recent book “the collier campbell archive” that i realised i had coveted many of their design for a long time. the book has become my new textile design bible. seeing their work all together in this amazing volume makes me want to throw away my computer and keep a strict gouche-only regime.

(all pictures from the book except the first one which is from here)

2. belle kogan: i discovered belle kogan’s work during an extensive etsy browsing session one day. she was an industrial designer from the late 1920’s and onwards, although like all good designers her work remains current and beautiful. i promptly brought 2 pieces (this is one of them). once they arrived i fell even more in love with them – i can definitely feel another collection coming on.

3. olimpia zagnoli: she is young and brilliant and cute and lives in milan and illustrates for long list of enviable clients. i discovered her work on instagram, and then i saw her extra sweet apartment (which she shares with her matching boyfriend) on freunde von freunden, accompanied by an equally as great interview (aside from giving me major pre-child-life envy). in this interview she also has very nice things to say.

4. kindah khalidy: textile designer and artists based in california – kindah’s work is close to my heart. especially as she makes products which are reasonably priced and useful, with hand-created patterns. ticks all my boxes. check out her lovely shop here.

5. sonia rentsch: sonia’s name keeps popping up all over the place for me lately. she is a lady that is hard to categorise: part stylist, part  3-d illustrator, part set-designer – her skills seem endless. whatever she does turns her hand to, she always puts together beautiful work. see more of her projects on her site:

(last image from current issue of inside out)

some other great local ladies: stampel, emily green, full drop co, harvest, super wild horses (new album ‘crosswords” = amazing) and of course my lovely friend kirra jamison (who’s new show “still point” at sophie gannon is SO GOOD).

one more lady mention: my favourite blog – i’m revolting. su’s taste is original and impeccable and always inspiring. she is the best pinner too.

AND AN ANNOUCMENT: it’s official –  i am working on book number 2! thanks to your support ‘Find and Keep’ has gone really well (just about to go into second print!), so i am working on a follow-up of sorts, again with hardie grant, which will be released later this year. exciting. and terrifying. and stressful. and also preventing me from blogging. and many other things too. but you know – you can find me on instagram. think of that as my more updated blog, but with far less words (i.e a much better version).

exhibition details coming up next….

Torafu architects at Mr.Kitly

Friday, February 8th, 2013

you know when you happen upon a collection of work, and it ends up being a whole lot of great things which you love, and were all actually made by the same person? well that is happened to me when i received a newsletter from mr. kitly announcing an upcoming exhibition with torafu architects.

once i clicked through to the torafu site i was all  ”NO WAY – they made that as well?  i love that!”. after an even closer inspection of their incredibly broad range of work (houses, shop fit outs, furniture, kids toys, book ends), they definitely fall into my “favourite designers of all time “category. here is just a small selection of why:

tarofu_1torafu_4torafu_6torafu_3torafu_5torafu_2

and now torafu will be here, in melbourne!  right in my hood in fact. they will be showcasing some of their furniture and children’s toys in australia for the first time, and putting together a no doubt beautiful air vase installtion in the mr. kitly gallery.  plus the director of torafu architects Koichi Suzano, will be present himself on the opening night (tomorrow!), and will be giving a talk. i will be there too, listening intently, undoubtly staring gooey-eyed and getting red cheeks at the prospect of meeting mr. suzano himself.

TORAFU ARCHITECTS EXHBITION at Mr. Kitly –  upstairs, 381 sydney rd, brunswick. opening night february 8th, 6pm-8pm, with talk from mr.Suzano from 6.30-7. exhibition continues until february 24th.

more details on the Mr.Kitly website.

it also must be said: HOW CRAZY WAS THE RESPONSE TO THAT GIVEAWAY?! it was pure madness in my inbox. i had NO idea it was going to go down like that! (a little push from lovely lucy definitely helped). thank-you to all who entered. the winners have now been chosen and notified. i’m very sorry if it wasn’t you. i promise i will have some more good giveaways in the coming months.

malaysia – coloured houses

Tuesday, October 16th, 2012

one thing i noticed both on this trip to malaysia and our last trip – was the colour. i’m not sure if it’s the tropical climate, or maybe the mix of cultures, but there is beautiful bright colour everywhere you look. i noticed it most in the everyday things: clothes, packaging and best of all – houses. people have no quarms painting their houses bright purple with a pink trim, or combining deep orange walls with a green roof. this time raph and i managed to take a few photos:

malay_house_1malayhouse_4malayhouse_9malayhouse_7malayhouse_2malayhouse_8malayhouse_3malayhouse_5malayhouse_6

although they might look outrageous to our conservative western warm-grey palettes, they looked completely appropriate (and wonderful) in the rainforest’s of langkawi. bring on the coral paint i say!

5 current happenings

Tuesday, August 28th, 2012

1. vase obsession: i brought this one from mr.kitly and i’m  filling with stolen-from-the-street pre-spring blossoms to max out it’s prettiness (at swim two birds pot holder from mr.kitly too).

2. re-discovering peter and the wolf: it was my absolute favourite when i was a kid (below is the record we had) and now my kids are loving it too. ari in particular, who listens to it  low through headphones at night while he goes to sleep. we downloaded this version.

Peter and the Wolf

3. heading to brisbane: to speak at semi-permenant (melbourne one as well in 2 weeks). even after my recent flurry of talks the thought of public speaking still makes me ill, but i am looking forward to enjoying some queensland sunshine, checking out kirra’s show, and also hanging out with lovely leah all weekend long. as part of my presentation i’m including some words of advice, such as:

advice_7

4. dreaming of spring outfits: i’m longing for that feeling of just wearing one layer and open toed shoes (fingers crossed i’ll get slice of that action in QLD). my current dream outfit includes: PAM dress, object and totem necklace and tsumori chisato espadrilles (available from pet shop girls)

5. guest editing lost and found newsletter: you can read my favourite melbourne tips here, and keep checking lost of found’s FB page to win a competition which will include an afternoon of shopping, lunch and my company in the very near future.

some other things currently happening on my computer: max crumb’s “maidenhair“, eat this food, and booking holidays.

any brisbane tips please send my way! in the meantime – BRING ON SPRING xx

DIY urges

Saturday, July 28th, 2012

all this talk about my book and i don’t believe i have exactly explained what it  is about? well – it is titled “find and keep“, and it’s loosely about finding ideas and inspiration, and then what to do with them – how to put them into action. it also shows my working process – how i find inspiration and what i do with it. also, as part of this there are some DIY projects in the book. 26 of them in fact!

admittedly, the projects section was the publishers idea. it never dawned on me to do something like this, and when they suggested it, i was like – “oh yeah, i guess i could do that”. and honestly, i’ve never thought as myself as the crafty type (although a lot of people do).

i have absolutely nothing against crafters – the opposite infact, i envy their skills. but here’s the truth about my craft skills – i can’t sew to save myself, i knew how to knit once but promptly forgot and would not have the faintest idea what to do with a crochet hook. but the more i thought about it, the more i saw how my work did fit into the “handmade” (or craft) category. and then putting the projects together didn’t feel as foreign as i thought. infact, it actually became my most favourite part of the book.

now, i’m back to my normal working life – some commercial illustration here, few exhibition pieces there (more on that soon), and what i’m fast discovering, is that all i want to do is go back to making things with my hands. pinterest has definitely helped fuel this fire (i’m addicted – I’ve had to limit myself to looking at it once a day otherwise i suffer from complete visual overload!). some images i have found which have encouraged me plan some projects:

blog_beadingblog_headbandblog_chairblog_brading

on my list: a bit of beading (image from here), a bit of braiding (fred butler head band, image from here; mato creative bag at totokaelo-art-object) and some site specific embroidery (chair by the amazing duo peter and sally necini).

i have put some of this craft urge into action recently. last week i made some cushions for mr.kitly which will be part of the “this space” installation which bree has put together at perimeter books. there are only 6 cushions in total –  2 which i dip-dyed and the others are one-off made from fabric i’ve collect from around the place. i think they turned out pretty:

photo1photo3

the installation runs until august 11, and any cushions not sold there will be sold at mr.kitly after that.

if you have any good DIY inspiration links please feel free to send my way – i simply can’t get enough. enjoy your weekend x

photo shoot fun

Monday, May 28th, 2012

photo_6photo_1photo_2photo_4photo_3photo_5

this book is taking over my life. every-single-living part of it. and then more. but it’s a good thing.

all of last week was a particularly fun bit – a photo shoot for one section of the book. having never done anything like it before, i was nervous. but thanks to my very very amazing book designer michelle and the calmest photographer in the world chris – it ended up being one of the best experience’s of my working life.

plus as a prelude to the shoot i got to play stylist for a day and borrow props from my favourite shops – THAT was awesome. half my house came along for the ride too. it was pretty chaotic in the studio at times, but nothing compared to the mess that fills my home studio now. it’s like a gigantic craft bomb has gone off in here. and it’s not pretty, it’s just downright embarrassing.

anyway, photographs are all finished and look beautiful – i can’t wait to show. there is still a ton of work to be completed before the final goes off to press, so for the next 6 weeks or so i may be not around so much. i promise, it will be worth it (at least i hope so anyway).

oh, and PS –  last week was also one of my first daily experiences of having to be somewhere 9-5 ever (actually was more like 8-6). i’m in shock myself that i have been working for 15 years and never been in a situation which required me to do it. so,  i wanted to send a BIG SHOUT OUT to the 9-5er’s out there. here am i whinging about the trails and tribulations of running my own business when comparatively my shit is footloose and fancy free. only now do i value the luxury of being able to duck down to the post office/go for a bike ride/start dinner/drop in on a friend of a cup of tea at my leisure. how you guys get any non-work type things accomplished i do not know – but obviously you do! you guys are amazing!

PPS i also had many great helpers last week and i am indebted to you all!!! you guys deserve your own blog post so i will be doing just that closer to when the book comes out. here are some blog kisses for now xxx

pillowcases for third drawer down (+ giveaway!)

Thursday, May 3rd, 2012

the pillowcases i designed for third drawer down are now available! they are titled ‘bear and girl dream’.

3dd_both3dd_bear3dd_girl3dd_detail_2

it goes without saying this was a GIGANTIC honour for me. i have loved and admired third drawer down since the beginning – their endless list of amazing collaborators has never ceased to amaze me (mike mills pillowcases too – whaaat?!!). plus their shop museum of art souvenirs is one of my melbourne (actually wolrdwide) favs.

you can buy the pillowcases online here and also at the third drawer down store (and maybe some other places too). one day i might have them for sale on my webstore as well. one day after this book is finished that is.

i also have one set to giveaway! please leave a comment below before midnight saturday (EST) and i will draw the lucky winner over the weekend.

* GIVEAWAY IS NOW CLOSED! thanks for all who entered!

late night rewards

Monday, April 30th, 2012

the thing about this late night business is this: i think i’m getting too old for it.

once upon a time, actually up until not that long ago (say a few months), working late nights didn’t bother me. yes, it was a bit of an effort to get back into the studio after the extraordinarily long nightly process of putting my children to bed, but once i was working and in the flow it was ok. and for the past 20 years or so, i was good on 5 or 6 hours sleep for days on end. i am finding this is no longer the case. now – i get tired, i get grumpy, i get emotional. i’d go so far as to say i get downright crazy.

i also end up looking terrible. i got away with dark circle’s under my eyes for a while – it was cool in my 20’s and early 30’s: some kind of badge of honour from my play hard/work hard ethic. but i’m finding the dark circles fast lose their cool appeal once combined with a small amount of wrinkles, and also quite a bit of puffiness. (btw i’m not one to worry about wrinkles – bring it on along with magic grey hair i say).

anyway, with my unwillingness to give up my extra days with ari (he is just too much fun, and i lose those days forever next year), and with a lot more work to go on my book, plenty of late nights lie ahead.

on the up-side, i do get an occaisional sleep-in, and even when i don’t, the kids often sleep til 7.30 anyway (blissful after years of 5-6am). plus there is the satisfaction of getting lots done – that feeling is hard to beat.

and also, rewards. i’m big on rewards in times like these. they don’t have to be expensive (although some of them are), more small luxuries and indulgences that makes facing those nights a little easier.

here are some of the things keeping me going at night:

ice-cream

pat and stick’s ice-cream sandwiches: have you tried these? oh-my-fucking-god. that’s all i’m going to say.  i discovered them late last year – at the time they were far away from my local grocer. but now, my grocer has them. the vanilla lace is my favourite. i try and limit myself to one per week. but i may have just ordered a multi-pack. this combined with my steady supply of green and black’s butterscotch chocolate, and my love of gooey cheese is danger. i will possibly be quite a few kg’s heavier by the time i finish this book.

PaperView_PressPhoto

sight unseen paper view: i’ve raved about this site before and it still remains a favourite. their book is as good as the site – if not better. it arrived just at a time when i was needing an inspiration boost and it delivered it hard and fast. for sale here.

semifredo

PAM semi-freddo cardi: yes, PAM again – i’m sorry, i can’t stop. and beside’s – my studio is freezing and amazingly designed cardi’s are an essentail for long colder nights in front of a computer. i collected this one last week and it’s become my favourite go-with-prettty-much-everything piece. available from someday. also in curtin house pet shop girls has been another rewards shopping spot of late – so good.

tea

nice tea: ahhh tea. my invigorator, my savoiur. when all else fails you come through and give me at least another 30 mins. current favourite is earl grey from T2, followed closely by a selection of japanese green teas from different places. as yet i don’t own this muuto cup to fill with my tea. it’s high on my late-night-reward list though.

group_work

exhibitions: sometimes being tired makes staying up late counter-productive. usually that time is late in the afternoon. so instead of getting flustered and achieving nothing, a change of scenery can do wonders. i visited mr.kitly’s current exhibition “group work” on one of these recent flustered afternoons and i loved it so much – it changed my mood quick smart (more info here and here).  i’m also looking forward to checking out the hungry workshop’s ‘trophy lives‘ show this friday evening.

grimes

grimes: raph usually has me on a steady flow of new music, but it’s nice when i find music myself. i happened upon grimes through eirian chapman’s blog (thank-you!) and immediately downloaded her new album. i love her kooky girly tones and her wardrobe and her washed-out rainbow hair in this filmclip too. i’m finding it to be good late night working music, especially as i can pretend i’m in a disco instead.

one of my easiest / most accessible rewards: writing this blog! i miss it when i don’t get to do it. so, thanks for reading and being part of my late-night-rewards program. any other rewards suggestions (especially non-sugary/fat-laden food ones) welcomed. xx

giveaways – arrietty and the cranky bear

Friday, February 10th, 2012

yes – it’s another giveaway! this time, i have kids in mind.

arrietty

first studio ghibli’s new movie “arrietty”. i can’t quite describe my love for studio ghibli. the ins and outs and dark-sides and light-sides of their animation provides me with endless inspiration. ‘my neighbor totoro‘ and ‘spirited away‘ are two of my long-standing favourite movies, and visiting the ghibli museum in tokyo was definitely one of my favourite travel experiences to date (that place is THE BEST!). and today, thanks again to madman, i have 5 family passes (2 adults, 2 children) to the new studio ghibli film arrietty, based on the children’s classic “the borrowers” (you can watch the trailer here). i have neither read the borrowers, nor have i seen the movie. but, regardless, i know this movie will be nothing less than a delightful visual feast, and can’t wait to see it.

cranky_1

second – “the cranky bear” ipad app. now – this whole ipad thing is pretty new to me. we brought one as family christmas present in an effort to get the kids off our computers. in retrospect, this has not worked as well as we hoped, and we should have just brought them their own computer (although that just feels a tad excessive). but i must say i do love the ipad (especially the ebay app – that little chime when you have been outbid on something is genius).

amoungst the pages of game apps, i’ve been trying to encourage some reading type app’s too – and the cranky bear (written and illustrated by nick bland) has recently been developed into a super good one. along with all the bells and whistles that an ipad can bring to a picture book (animation, narration, interaction etc), it also features the voice of angus sampson as the cranky bear. you can check it out a sample here. thanks to my dear friend nat at wheelbarrow i have 2 free download’s of this to give away as well.

so – how am i going to do this double giveaway? if you are interested, just enter as per usual by leaving a comment, but please state if you would like to be in the draw for both or if not specify which one. also, please note – the movie passes are valid for australia only, but the download is available internationally. oh and the giveaway will close 5pm sunday, and winners notified soon after that. gosh hope that’s not all too confusing.

happy friday!

* Giveaway is now closed! thanks for those who entered! winners notified shortly
