new finds: ladies edition

Friday, April 5th, 2013

i’ve been thinking about this post for a little while – a few months even – wanting to share some of the things i have been discovering lately. but it took a different turn recently when i gave a talk at creative mornings. once i had finished there was question time, and someone asked me who were my biggest influences. every one i could think of on the spot was a male. this felt a little hypocritical, particularly after talking about the subconscious struggle i had had in a male-dominated industry.

i did have, and still do have, a lot of female influences, but at that moment my mind went blank (which is not a rare occurence to be honest). so i thought i would dedicate this “new finds” to the laides.  here are my top favourite new finds – the ladies version:

1. collier campbell. these two english sisters have been working since the 1960’s, and for the likes of liberty and yves saint laurent, but it wasn’t until i came across their recent book “the collier campbell archive” that i realised i had coveted many of their design for a long time. the book has become my new textile design bible. seeing their work all together in this amazing volume makes me want to throw away my computer and keep a strict gouche-only regime.

(all pictures from the book except the first one which is from here)

2. belle kogan: i discovered belle kogan’s work during an extensive etsy browsing session one day. she was an industrial designer from the late 1920’s and onwards, although like all good designers her work remains current and beautiful. i promptly brought 2 pieces (this is one of them). once they arrived i fell even more in love with them – i can definitely feel another collection coming on.

3. olimpia zagnoli: she is young and brilliant and cute and lives in milan and illustrates for long list of enviable clients. i discovered her work on instagram, and then i saw her extra sweet apartment (which she shares with her matching boyfriend) on freunde von freunden, accompanied by an equally as great interview (aside from giving me major pre-child-life envy). in this interview she also has very nice things to say.

4. kindah khalidy: textile designer and artists based in california – kindah’s work is close to my heart. especially as she makes products which are reasonably priced and useful, with hand-created patterns. ticks all my boxes. check out her lovely shop here.

5. sonia rentsch: sonia’s name keeps popping up all over the place for me lately. she is a lady that is hard to categorise: part stylist, part  3-d illustrator, part set-designer – her skills seem endless. whatever she does turns her hand to, she always puts together beautiful work. see more of her projects on her site:

some other great local ladies: stampel, emily green, full drop co, harvest, super wild horses (new album ‘crosswords” = amazing) and of course my lovely friend kirra jamison (who’s new show “still point” at sophie gannon is SO GOOD).

one more lady mention: my favourite blog – i’m revolting. su’s taste is original and impeccable and always inspiring. she is the best pinner too.

AND AN ANNOUCMENT: it’s official –  i am working on book number 2! thanks to your support ‘Find and Keep’ has gone really well (just about to go into second print!), so i am working on a follow-up of sorts, again with hardie grant, which will be released later this year. exciting. and terrifying. and stressful. and also preventing me from blogging. and many other things too. but you know – you can find me on instagram. think of that as my more updated blog, but with far less words (i.e a much better version).

malaysia – coloured houses

Tuesday, October 16th, 2012

one thing i noticed both on this trip to malaysia and our last trip – was the colour. i’m not sure if it’s the tropical climate, or maybe the mix of cultures, but there is beautiful bright colour everywhere you look. i noticed it most in the everyday things: clothes, packaging and best of all – houses. people have no quarms painting their houses bright purple with a pink trim, or combining deep orange walls with a green roof. this time raph and i managed to take a few photos:

malay_house_1malayhouse_4malayhouse_9malayhouse_7malayhouse_2malayhouse_8malayhouse_3malayhouse_5malayhouse_6

although they might look outrageous to our conservative western warm-grey palettes, they looked completely appropriate (and wonderful) in the rainforest’s of langkawi. bring on the coral paint i say!

new finds

Monday, January 30th, 2012

i’m struggling through the last few days of the school holidays. everything was going pretty well until the end of last week, but right now i’ve had it up to here with children fighting, trying to conjure up creative activities (which usally ends in an ipad/iphone being shoved in their general direction and me shouting “fine“) and my pantry being in limbo thanks to the endless appetite of growing boys. plus raph has been sick (one part proper sickness, three parts man flu),  which is just down right annoying (i am quite the heartless cow when it comes to dealing with whimpering grown men). to top it all off, the cats have also been meeewing at me incessantly, wanting food/attention at any given part of the day.

i would say i’m currently feeling a bit like a household slave.

but, apart from that, life has been good. we’ve been enjoying the summer days, and i’ve had some incredibly exciting emails appear in my inbox the past week.  i’ve also been treating myself to a few nice things here and there (as a reward for enduring slavery). here are some of them:

new_5new_3new_2new_1new_6new_4

from the top:

- a new shelf. my studio has been in desperate need of more storage for a while now, so after an extensive search i fell in love with this one from codename tom (and it was on sale). i’m still in the slow process of re-arranging everything – a quick look of the top few shelves for now.

- pieces from some educational puzzles i brought from the oppy. not sure exactly what i will do with them, just rearranging them in different patterns on my desk is pretty good for the moment.

- vintage pennants: my new obsession. i brought the brunswick one for raph for his birthday (as part of my secret make raph’s-office-awesome plan), and i couldn’t resist anything that says “endless caverns”. from eBay.

- the best postcard in the world. a badly but beautifully hand-painted photo, with script that reads “ollie, age 12, 1913″. i can’t stop looking at it. from eBay again.

- a “room decorator”, i think from peru. the photo doesn’t do the colours justice – fluro pinks, minty greens, sulphury yellows. i have it hanging around my lounge room doorway and it makes me smile pretty much every time i walk under it.

- my new journals: “bear magic” and “lost girl”. i made them with ginkgo press (who made my last journals too). these are just samples for now, but i will have some on my webstore later in feb, and they will be for sale at other places too.

oh, there will still be a giveaway… soon! x

valentine’s day for hungry workshop

Tuesday, January 17th, 2012

this week, i’ve been kick-started into action with a few nice jobs from the JW crew. despite my new years resolution i said yes, because they were both awesome (and because there is this expensive dress i really want…)

something else i’ve been working on: a valentine’s day card for the hungry workshop. up until very recently these guys were sharing raph’s warehouse, so i’ve got to chat to these lovely folk on many occasion. it was cool to be able to work with them as well. even cooler still to see my design superbly letter pressed in fluoro inks. and despite being pretty anti-valentine’s day, i did like the theme given to me (lovestruck) and i really love how the card turned out.

the guys at malade athletics have also designed a card, and you can buy it along with mine and a hungry workshop designed card (so clever!) in a pack at the hungry workshop shop here.

another giveaway coming up next! x

birthday list

Thursday, October 20th, 2011

my birthday is fast approaching. despite my love for celebrating birthdays, it could turn out to be a bit of a non-event this year. raph is experiencing a staffing crisis which means he is usually working 14hr days, making it tricky to organise anything. and that big birthday (yes 40. it freaks me out just write it) is just a couple of years away, so i’m happy to save up some birthday credits to make that party/parties really really incredible.

however, i’m still planning on spoiling myself a little this year, and of course will still be using it as an excuse to dream up a list of ridiculous birthday wants. as follows:

1. scholten and baijings bed linen: or pretty much any products that they make. their use of colour leaves me breathless. available in australia from corporate culture

birthday_bed_linen_2birthday_bed_linen_1

2. misaki kawaii painting: ms.kawaii is my (and a lot of other peeps) favourite artist at the mo. new PAM x Misaki kawaii leggings would suffice too (pic from this article)

birthday_misaki

3. hand made arrows from fredericks and mae: no, i’m not into archery, but these are so beautiful that i would still like to own some. they would look great just on the wall. available in melbourne from third drawer down.

birthday_arrows

4. russell wright ‘american modern’ pottery: i do have a soft spot for vintage pottery, especially when it comes in such pretty shapes and colours. available from bauer pottery internationally and angelucci 20th century in melbourne. (pics from here and here)

birthday_pottery_4birthday_pottery_3

5. backyard studio: i’m still utterly obsessed by this idea (since here), possibly spurred on by jealousy now that raph has his warehouse. i have daily visions of a modest seperate space in the garden, open to ocassional young visitors, but on the whole just my own. surely not much to ask. a ‘modern meets rustic’ combination of these two below that included a wall of shelving would be perfect. you can even download plans/construction intructions for the top one here. hint hint dad. (thanks for the tip off mel)

that is all for now. some fun news and giveaways coming up next week xx

5 things to make me happy

Thursday, August 18th, 2011

1. spring dresses:

blog_2

with the onset of an early spring (another thing to add to the happy list), all i want to do is wear dresses. unfortunately my wardrobe wants are far outweighing my budget at the moment, but one can always dream. “miranda dress” from gorman and “swish dress” from karen walker.

2. the heavy mental:

blog_1kelly_lamb

my good friend ed’s new online project. he has been working hard on this one for a while and it’s so, so great to see it come to fruition. and its epically good too. my favourite articles so far are fergadelic and kelly lamb (easily the best hanging pots in the world!). have a look here .

3. marbled paper:

Marbled-Paper_blog_2MarbledPaper_blog

so the new tie-dye. i can’t get enough! this weekend i am making my own too.

4. l’atelier de monsier truffle:

monsiermonsier_2

i do love a new cafe in my hood, especially when they double as a chocolate salon and their lunch options are fancy french ones. its even child-friendly too. l’atelier de monsier truffle – 351 lygon st, east brunswick. (all photos by liz mcleish c/o broadsheet article here).

5. someday sale:

pam_sale

could just solve my wardrobe vs. budget dilemma’s. at the old douglas and hope store on brusnwick st. bargains aplenty! until monday.

harvest workshop

Thursday, June 30th, 2011

workshop_1workshop_2workshop_3workshop_4workshop_5workshop_6workshop_7

i held my “paper folk” mobile making workshop at harvest over the weekend. even though it was a whole 2 days the time went by so fast!  i think i did an ok job teaching everyone, but it was my first time directing a workshop so i don’t have much to compare it too. regardless i had  lots of fun and was so impressed by the clever ladies who attended – it made me really inspired.

i am still knee-deep in coloured paper making things for my closing party/exhibition on sunday. my residency and pop-up shop has felt so indulgent and a pretty nice break from the real world. unfortunately the real world hasn’t actually gone anywhere and my other studio workload is piling up… next week is going to be full on. for now i’m going to relish these last few days of cut-paper fun. hope to see you sunday!

interior decoration torment

Monday, February 28th, 2011

hello! i’m here. sorry i haven’t been for a while. i was here, just not on my blog. i have been getting rather distracted with – well, life. not traumatic things like a few weeks ago, just everyday things – work, painting my nails, cooking long and involved dinners, drinking wine – that kind of thing. i’ve even managed to watch a whole tv series on dvd. plus it’s raph’s busiest time of year, so i have also been doing a lot of solo parenting too. it’s actually been a pretty nice pace and i have been enjoying it .

even with life running pretty well, there is one thing which has still been driving me crazy – our new lounge room. although, not in a bad way – its just i have been spending way too much time looking at vintage sofa’s on ebay, finding local rug wholesalers, measuring floor sizes and bookmarking pages in magazines and interiors blogs. and if not that,  i am constantly thinking of furniture arrangements, colour palettes, art purchases and craft projects to complete it all. my brain has been relentless in its pursuit for the perfect lounge room pieces and it’s actually got to a point were i feel like i am tormenting myself with interior decoration. and the really tragic part  - a piece of furniture is yet to be moved.

but i now have a deadline – my sister is coming to visit, and since we are sans guest room for now, i have decided she simply must have a new lounge room to sleep in. which gives me this week to get it all together.

amongst the mental torment, i have managed to work out what my dream lounge room would comprise:

antique kilim rug: preferably from loom , but more likely from a local turkish rug dealer.

kilim

indoor plants: one big tree-like one (fiddle leaf fig will be perfect thanks), pot plants in macrame hangers (nice ones from small town) and a terrarium (with dinosaur!) from miniscapes.

treeterrarium

lots of colour and a bit of clutter: like in these two lovely rooms (from edition paumes “copenhagen apartments” – available online here). although knowing me and my love for stuff, possibly a bit more clutter. and mess (btw marcus hay does clutter really well)

colourscolour_2

vintage leather couch: this amazing wikkelso one from great dane. one day, it shall be mine.

sofa

knitted pouf: this one from christien meindertsma is the best. and in my dreams, i would have yellow one, a pink one, and an olive one. available from thomas eyck

pouf

storage: for the modest amount of clutter, and our not-so-modest amount of books.

bookshelf

round coffee table: something i have missed in current desperately small lounge, in particular a round one (inspired by this). below from mark tuckey

coffe_table

lots of light: not something i can exactly change as yet (proper renovations are a few years off), but what we have in the new room is not so bad. i can live with it. especially when the mobile by renilde de pueuter i brought from mr.kitly yesterday is hanging in the window.

mobile

throw in a a couple of quirky arm chairs, some brightly coloured 1960’s posters and a george nelson bubble lamp and it will be perfect. unfortunately my budget is not, and i am fairly sure this is going to cause at least one outrageous foot-stamping “what do you mean paying the mortgage is more important than buying furinture?!” tantrum from myself this week. but fingers crossed i can still make it work with our existing vegemite-stained (but still some-what nice) furniture. will be sure to post photos if so.

i must admit, i feel rather silly being so obsessed with material frivolities when there are much more serious things going on in the world, such as the devastation of the christchurch earthquake. please help out our our kiwi compadres by dontating here.

ps i am not sure where the photos of the lovely indoor fig tree and bookcase are from – sorry if its from your blog/camera/house and i didnt credit you. please let me know if so so i can correct!

bright!

Thursday, December 9th, 2010

well, its been an interesting time in the studio. my computer just couldn’t cope with the flurry and excitement of my website launching (thanks for all nice comments!) and up and died on tuesday night. yes, i did have pretty much everything backed up on a separate hard drive, but it has still made my life tricky, and also made me strangely emotional. i have had that computer for 7 years and it has served me well.

i knew it was on the way out but it still took me by surprise – especially financially. so while raph and i (who’s computer is also on the brink of death) slowly gather the money to buy 2 new computers, i have been working on leah’s computer and leah has been working from home. although it’s not been that bad, it still feels make-shift and i haven’t been able to settle down actually achieve much at all.

to add to the dysfunctional pain, my phone refused to text or dial anything with the 6 and 9 buttons, and my much-loved coat rack simply fell of the wall. i couldn’t help but feel everything was giving up on me.

feeling pretty sorry for myself, i tried to have a whinge to raph, who promptly snapped me out of it with one of his it’s-just-life/let’s-make-a-plan type talks, and now its all ok. really, he can work wonders. we get new computers on tuesday (YES!), and i checked my phone plan and its up TOMORROW!! (i have resisted for a while, but iphone here i come!)

when i have been managing to get some work done, there have been some pretty great things to put my efforts into – some new projects with GAS (including a cute one for my favourite japanese department store),  poster artwork for an upcoming (very exciting) tour, graphics for another one of raph’s ventures (very soon) and making plans for next year (big changes!). also, our mobiles have been snapped up by lovely stores around the globe (including this one) and are also part of the design files xmas giveaway.

plus i have been distracting myself with lots bright things :

bright_1bright_2bright_3bright_4bright_6bright_7

*composition i photographed as one of my new site backgrounds. i was so happy with it it hung around for few days

* baby beets from my garden and pretty ranunculus

* presents for awesome ladies from a very awesome lady – so 1989! so wild!

* ari making a card for leah (happy birthday leah!)

* another present from another awesome lady (this book is properly mind-blowingly good. pip, you are a legend). NB – fluro yellow nailpolish, thanks lovely bonnie)

* a private commission piece i just finished and is currently in transit to the framers.

PLUS another bit of brightness – my very very very amazing mum has started a blog. tune in for lots of musing on family and life and food and drink (and maybe some more drink). it’s just occured to me that between here, my mum’s blog and my sister’s blog you could pretty much know our entire life stories. how werid. and a little scary. (thank-god my dad doesn’t like computers).

anyway, that’s it for now. i tried really hard not to make this another whingey post. i hope that it wasn’t. you are nice for reading it even if it was. x

grandpa’s house

Sunday, November 7th, 2010

mountaintadpolingfeildtyke_grasstreedylanrosesdad_table

we went to visit my dad today. he lives at the bottom of the dandenong ranges. it’s always a small boys paradise at his place –  lots of space to make cubby houses, trees to climb, paddocks of long grass to hide in, a damn full of ducks and sometimes tadpoles, fudge the dog and dylan the free-roaming horse (he likes to poke his head in the veranda door while we are having lunch). and of course grandpa who makes us fish and chips and his special noodle salad, followed by cups of tea.

today i was obessesed by the pink eden roses (i think also called pierre de ronsard?) that were blooming on mass in my uncles’ garden (he lives on the property too). i am not usually so into roses but these looked so plump and old-world and amazing next to the very green grass i couldn’t resist but pick a big bunch.

i was feeling grumpy all weekend, but left here much happier. amazing what a bit of almost-country air can do.
