hello again

Tuesday, June 8th, 2010

i’m back. well actually, i didnt go anywhere, i just haven’t felt compelled to blog. possibly something to do with melbourne winter taking hold. in the space of a week a huge cloud of cold has descended on us and now i can no longer ride my bike without gloves and a scarf and all i want to do is eat and read my book in bed (not at the same time. maybe sometimes). and some nights i have even been able to do just that, as the studio has been maintaining a comparatively leisurely pace of late. that was until i wrote a new “to do” list today and discovered i am soon to be back in the land of the manic deadline and late night working.

despite the calm, there has still been plenty going on, in the studio and otherwise.

most importantly – tyke turned 7. it seems ridiculously old to me, and i still trying to work out how this all happened. but it does suits him. one of his presents was a kite. a proper kite, not one that falls apart after one session of flying. he has been loving it.

i have also been on a book buying frenzy. everytime i step into metropolis books molly always shows me the absolute best things which i can not resist. i have been re-visiting some of my old favourite second hand book haunts too. plus there was the books at manic sale, where i picked up an enzo mari “il posto dei giochi” (the place of games) for a quarter of the normal price! i cant tell you how long i have lusted over one of these. and even better now i have kids who love it too – for them its like the awesome-ness of a cardboard box on a whole new level.

books

also included in my book booty (which is not at all shown justice by this exceptionally crappy photo) is latest book illustrated by marc boutavant (my current illustration hero), a book about contemporary japanese paper (heaven) and also one on the book covers by celestino piatti - a swiss illustrator heralded as the most productive book designer of all times. score!

the beatbox kitchen has also been going great guns lately. raph and the beatbox have been catering for the likes of wilco, plus many other bands and special events. the friday night jams have been going strong, and he has now added saturday morning breakfast in the same spot. the breakfast menu includes potato tacos with salsa verde and creme fraiche (everything made from scratch including the tacos), minute steak and egg roll, and pour over coffee made from very special coffee beans from seven seeds. if you are northside in melbourne (crn park and rathdowne st  nth carlton to be precise) on the weekend GO! for details check beatbox site

and as far as work, well of course there has been plenty of that going on too. we have just finished up a very cute job for gorman, some new decor for cookie and are midway through some new prints and embroidery designs for irony. i am also in the middle of an illustration job which came through jacky winter. its quite big, and will go across print and TV, but not in this country! will post about that when i can.

speaking of jacky winter, i recently recieved some pics of the new field guide which will be out in a few weeks. it looks amazing – hard cover, cloth bound, gold foil text, printed end papers and comes in its own printed cardboard box too. lucky me was asked by JW to illustrate the afore mentioned end papers. was one of my favourite jobs to date, made even better when i saw it had been printed in flouro pink!

and last but not least i also designed a little avatar for my sister emily’s etsy store, where she sells very very cute handmade owls (called jorpins) and other things too. i am also (not so) patiently waiting for her to start a blog – she is much better at writing than me and its sure to be a good one.

thats about it for now. surely that makes up for my little venture into hibernation? hope you are staying warm x

justine clarke project and other new things

Tuesday, February 16th, 2010

late last year (on christmas eve, to be precise) i was asked if i was interested in art directing the new justine clarke’s 3rd CD and DVD release (titled “great big world“). for those of you who don’t know justine clarke, she is an australian actress who has been in many films and tv series, is often on playschool, and also has a solo career singing songs for kids. she was also in mad max 3.

in the past we have helped justine with some merchandise through tiny mammoth, and she had been a joy to work with. and i always love to work on kid-related stuff, and wanted to try my hand at art directing – so i said yes.

we have just finished the artwork for the CD (see cover below – released through ABC in april), and are now finishing the concepts for the 15 film clips on the DVD. yes, that’s right, for my first venture into film and animation i am making not one, but  fifteen film-clips. i don’t like doing things in halves. and am quite willing to hand over my sanity for the next few months.

other goings on in the studio this week – we have been helping my favourite coffee retailer and cafe seven seeds with some invites for an event they have coming up at the melbourne food and wine festival (you can read more about their event here) we decided to gocco them all on thick poster board… ink didnt like the stock very much and it took all day but we are quite happy with the results. hopefully will be doing a few bits and pieces for seven seeds this year. unfortunately (or probably fortunately) i dont get paid in coffee.

this week i also once again entered the strange world that is feminine hygiene marketing. i have been there before and its been in interesting experience. who knew that guiding a females pad or tampon choice was so complicated. believe me it is. i cant say much more than that for now, hopefully can show/write about it more in the near future. has been fun. and weird. very weird.

and one last thing – the beatbox kitchen website is now up! includes a calender showing which events we will be at in the near future (including good vibrations this saturday) and some other good stuff too – www.beatboxkitchen.com

BBW_DRESSES

the new built by wendy book! was pretty satisfying to see all our illustrations in place for a third time around. cover worked out quite nicely too. it is officially out in the US tomorrow – you can pre-order from amazon, and also from BBW site, but a little birdy told me it might also be available locally at metropolis books in the near future.

here are some of our fav drawings we made for the book -

and also speaking of online shopping… dare i say it… we have been testing our online store this week and all the cyber-space gremlins that have been causing us much grief have been chased away, so it is now very close to being live. perhaps i have said similar things in the past, but this time it is for real! once its up will be sure to post. possibly even with a little giveaway as well.

and if you are looking for some kitchen accessory envy/inspiration (as i always am), check out lisa cogdon (of rare device, SF) amazing cathrineholm collection on dwell. her plate display (and pretty much everything else) is great too. (via the lovely seesaw designs)

i am still sorting through photos ….

Friday, October 9th, 2009

well actually, i feel like i hit the ground running since we got back, and i haven’t had a single minute to choose the best ones. but in the meantime here are some other things i have been up to:

we went to the opening of johann’s exhibition – raph has 2 little bro’s – joh and rudin. joh is the youngest (23), and he has just curated a show called “room service” which opened last night at the carlton club. joh’s artists selection is smart – each artist work is different,  but as a whole exhibition it comes together a really well. my favs were rudin’s (raphs other brother, who formally starts his career as a tattooist this week – go rudes!) beautiful old school tattoo style ink drawings, marty bell’s insane drawings and oliver and yoko’s room of paintings and screen prints. also in oli and yoko’s room was a little cupboard installation with their 3yr-old son akira’s drawings covering the walls and a “chuppa-chup grow room”! too much! below is a pics from their zine – colour versions of these paintings in the show. the exhibition is on until the 22nd – more details here. if you and melbourne its def worth a look.

noe made a costume for sarah blasko. sarah blasko is currently on tour and noe made her stage costume. i went to see sarah perform on sunday night and the costume was sooooooo beautiful – noe did and amazing job. not only does it have crazy technical sewing detail but it has two surprises – the front drops down to reveal and patchwork spectrum heart and also just before she performed “no turning back”  the sholders popped open to reveal beatiful concertina colour detail! genius!

leah made this print f0r fundraislinn exhibition - isn’t it amazing? i also put in piece, and many, many others contributed.  unfortunately aislinn passed away  on the day of exhibition. was also the day before her 30th brithday. i didnt know her, but its such a tragedy. the exhibition did raise $30,000 which will be passed onto her family and breast cancer research.

i finished this illustration for myer’s emporiom magazine. another nice job which came through jacky winter

some new blog love

Friday, August 21st, 2009

before i started this blog, i must admit i was a bit sceptical of the whole blog-thing, and purposely avoided it. i am not sure why, but i think its has something to do with my phobia of technology. (i am a firm believer in doing some things the old way. for example –  if someone asks me about becoming a designer, i would say learn to draw before even thinking about turning on a computer). but then, slowly but surely, the google machine sucked me in, and i started to discover a few blogs that had really awesome information. and then some that had really good things to say. and then some with really amazing pictures i possibly wouldn’t have discovered anywhere else… and so my blog-acceptance (and now near obsession) begun.

so, here are a few of my currents favourites -

madame herve – by tilda b. herve, a swiss design scout. her selection of beautiful and interesting objects/design is exceptionally tasteful and makes me want to throw out all my stuff and become a discerning minimalist (FAT chance)

madame

diversal –  by dale van iersel, who once upon a time used to be on raph’s skate team. when dale isn’t skateboarding, he is a courier, and on his travels takes pictures of random things he sees, as well as occasional party shots of PYT’s in melbourne. his observational skills are great and his photos even better. (for more pics of melbourne’s PYT, skateboarding and other interesting happenings accompanied with witty commentry check out max’s blog. max also makes awesome jeans)

dale

temple of light – i dont know who does this blog but its amazing – they post often and its always original, interesting and great.

temple

also… for some more  friday afternoon time-wasting (always a fan), take a look at the interactive colouring-in illustration i created an for online magazine sesame.

i’m off to drop kids at grandma’s, drink some vodka tonics and see eddy current at the prince – what a way to start the weekend!

cheerio! x

my bad ebay addiction

Wednesday, June 24th, 2009

lately, i have noticed my ebay-ing has been getting out of control.  there has been a few warning signs – the usual – trying to hide the extra packages in the mail every week, finding myself checking my saved searches 5 times a day to see if any new amazing buys had been listed. but i knew it had really become a problem when i bid on (and won) a very big and equally as heavy (and awesome) antique medical book from canada, had it shipped to a friend in new york in time for raph’s visit, made him collect it there and lug it around the rest of his journey through the US and then home to me.

on another occasion, i was so desperate for a chair that i missed out on (not outbid – worse – missed the auction so it went to ‘buy it now’ and was sold before i could get it) i approached the seller and offered her more than the sold price, pleading with her, and telling her what a great ebayer i was. that’s when i had stop, and have a good hard look at myself. and my visa statement.

i have come up with some good excuses for it. due to the glorious rain we have been having and studio busy-ness, i haven’t made it out to very many of my usual opp-shops at all, nor have i visited camberwell market for weeks (possibly even months – well, maybe a month). i am a “digger” at heart and something in me needs to seek this junk out and buy it and proudly add it to my collection of other junk. so, when i cant go to it, it can come to me - ebay is my online opp-shop and/or trash and treasure market. but on an international scale. and its open 24 hours a day. and it has paypal. so, so, so dangerous.

so, here are some pics of the recent fruits of my addiction

ebay_gameebay_peter_max_1ebay_peter_max_2ebay_blocksebay_slippersebay_library_health_1ebay_librbay_health_2

from the top – vintage wooden shape toy (i love wooden kids toys, and ari likes it too), original 1971 peter max poster book, aesop’s fables picture blocks (packing as good as blocks), very cute handmade slippers (again, for ari, really!) and the last 2 pics – my pride and joy (that i made raph lug across the USA) – 1917 edition of “library of health – 20 books, one volume”. it is 11.5cm thick and 1774 pages, but who can resist antique full-colour plates of the human body like that!! even when they are in canada. not i.

in studio news, i recently completed these illustrations for visa -

visa_computer2visa_plane1visa_phone1

they are being used in conjunction with there current “go”campaign, i think mostly in direct mail.

like some of my other my more commercial work, its not immediately recognisable as my work or personal style. that’s part of the reason i really like commercial work – getting commissioned to create styles that are outside your set of usual aesthetics or subject mater. it mixes everything up and is a challange, but its still fun and still creating and still doesnt feel like a real job.

simply energy

Thursday, May 28th, 2009

a little while ago, i wrote about a job i was working on at clemenger, and now i can finally reveal what it was  - illustrations as part of “reduce the badness” campaign for simply energy. here is some of the work:

se_1se_21se_31se_41

the illustrations are going to appear on billboards, metrolites, direct mail advertising, website… a whole bunch of very public mediums. if you are in victoria or south australia and happen to spot one, let me know!

sunday age illustration

Sunday, March 15th, 2009

i had these illustrations for a travel feature in the “sunday life” magazine of the age newspaper today. my parents were always trying to ram current affairs down my throat as a kid (i remember being tested on the members of parliament at the age of 6), and were avid fans of the age (and still are). i guess it was a big part of my childhood, so i was pretty excited to be contacted by them to do this illustration. was fun too.
