malaysia – coloured houses

Tuesday, October 16th, 2012

one thing i noticed both on this trip to malaysia and our last trip – was the colour. i’m not sure if it’s the tropical climate, or maybe the mix of cultures, but there is beautiful bright colour everywhere you look. i noticed it most in the everyday things: clothes, packaging and best of all – houses. people have no quarms painting their houses bright purple with a pink trim, or combining deep orange walls with a green roof. this time raph and i managed to take a few photos:

although they might look outrageous to our conservative western warm-grey palettes, they looked completely appropriate (and wonderful) in the rainforest’s of langkawi. bring on the coral paint i say!

malaysia

Wednesday, October 10th, 2012

we have been back for just over week and like all good holidays our trip now feels like a distant memory. we succeeded in relaxing, eating, lapping up the (mostly) good weather, much swimming and a touch of family-style adventuring too. i also succeeded in getting sick on the second day with some kind of hideous cold. it felt like a year’s worth of sickness in one hit, and sucked. but our nice hotel room, good room service and being forced to relax made me feel better in no time.

highlights of this trip: getting caught in the loudest/scariest/most exhilarating tropical thunderstorm whilst eating at an open air restaurant in KL; home-cooked lunch with raph’s crazy, awesome malay family; meeting up with parts of our melbourne family in penang; exploring langkawi in our hire car; watching and hearing great hornbills every morning and evening; seeing monkey’s – lots of them; raph convincing every street hawker he could to give him cooking lessons and recipes; watching tyke and ari grow as human beings.

here is a mere snippet of the 700 or so photos we all took:

since our return things have been FULL ON – for both of us. my book launch is fast approaching, as too are raph’s new trucks – looking like it could be a double launch. more details to be announced very, very soon.

rituals and potatoes and advance copies

Wednesday, September 19th, 2012

so. i had a big post planned – about the things i’ve been up to lately. there has been quite lot: speaking at the semi-permanent conferences, visiting leah in tropical tweed heads, a shoot for inside out, ari’s 5th birthday. but of course all those things meant i have been manic, and have barely had a second to sit down. so you might just miss out on that stuff (unless you are on instagram – then you get to see everything). but i will quickly tell you about 2 exhibitions i am involved in in the coming weeks. the first is ‘Rituals’, curated by the ever-busy hungry workshop. all the artists where asked to design masks or faces – here is a sneak preview of my work combined with eirian chapman’s piece:
ritual2rituals-detail2Ritual4-1

the exhibition opens on saturday at koskela showrooms in sydney (where the school also resides), and is up until the 7th of october. you can see a flashy preview of some of the work on the hungry workshop blog. (the show is rumoured to be heading to melbourne next).

the second show is at ganim store (61 brunswick st, fitzroy). as part of their upcoming kids week rae has asked 40 artists to customise a mr.potato head doll. they are not for sale, just for fun (which is great!). details below:

MR_POTATO_HEAD_SHOW

and another thing that happended last week. something monumental, something i could not not write about : an advance copy of my book “find and keep” arrived!

FAK_advance

i am so happy with it. i can’t wait for it to be out in the big wide world and getting put to good use. it will be in bookstores from the 1st of november. keep an eye out here for some sneak peeks and also melbourne and sydney launch party details.

there you go – i did get to sit down long enough to write something. and as from tomorrow i will have many more opporutnites to sit down. or lie down even. possibly next to a pool, or on a beach, with cocktail in hand. yes – we are going on a holiday. were off to  malaysia for some more tropical fun times. i plan to eat and lounge and then eat again. and oh my god do i feel as though i have earned it. see you in two weeks!

summer’s end

summer_6summer_1summer_11summer_9summer_4summer_3summer_2summer_17summer_12summer_13summer_15summer_8

although we have at least a month of warm days left, summer officially ends next week. in a town where our erractic weather is often the topic of conversation, we managed to score a pretty perfect one, full of blues skies and hot-but-not-too-hot days, with a few thunderstorms thrown in for good measure.

so far it’s been filled with the usual fun this season brings – BBQ’s, parties, beach, swimming, jenga, adventure’s with friends and many drinks. tyke got to see his favourite band play at his first festival, ari learned to swim properly, raph perfected and fed us many new recipes, and i got to relax with a capital R. and for this first time i felt there was lots of kids around. i liked that a lot.

a few cooler, darker mornings reminiscent of autumn are creeping their way in now, which i love, but i will be sad to see this summer end.

we’ve been on a road trip…

port_fairy_3port_fairy_4port_fairy_5port_fairy_6port_fairyport_fairy_2grampians_8grampians_7grampians_5grampians_3grampians_9grampians_wallabie

we spent a few days in port fairy and then made our way to the grampians. it was simple and easy and relaxing. we took our time and stopped at skate parks and country opp-shops and old school bakeries along the way (as well as lunch at this fine establishment). we did lots of walks – through old volcano’s, amazing waterfalls and an olive grove too. we saw lots of wildlife – kangaroos, wallabies, emus, an echidna and a koala – even a red-bellied black snake (twice!). i did some bird-watching too – i wanted most of all to see a gang gang cockatoo, but sadly only got to hear them in the distance.

my only complaints - in halls gap, we were completely wroughted by the general store (note to self: take own food next time), and i was momentarily disgusted by the lack of bourgey cafe’s (so first world!). i got over that pretty quick though.

all in all – we had a super, great, fun family times.

i needed this holiday like nothing else. i know i write a lot about being tired, before we left i was so exhausted and was wondering if it’s all worth it. it’s awful to feel like that. but the holiday made everything ok, and now i’m ready to do it all again. even have a a few new ideas up my sleeve.

how are you going out there?

tokyo

tokyo_1tokyo_2tokyo_3tokyo_4tokyo_5tokyo_6tokyo_8tokyo_7tokyo_9tokoy_7

it was interesting seeing how things have changed since march’s events. on the surface not much at all, but then you notice the fridge lights at lawson are not on (in an effort to save power), and that there is lots of talk about radio-active food, and a distinct lack of tourists too. and then, there was also the 4.0 aftershock we experienced on thursday night. that was a definite wake-up call.

despite all this, it was still the toyko i love, full of inspiration and awesomeness and friends and the best food on the planet (i think we ate 6 meals a day). our 5 days were action packed – we discovered some new spots (narukiyo izakaya – the best!), visited the tokyo art book fair (heaven), drank litre’s of iced lattes and biru (not together) and had some good meetings too. despite our hectic schedule raph and i managed to squeeze in lots of hanging out / sleeping-in which was a real treat.

now,  it all feels like a dream… but its nice to be home and safe and with our kids in cold but earthquake-free melbourne. and i’m also busy – so busy! freelance work coming out of ears (love it) and next week i am participating in 3 events as part of the state of design festival. later in august i am speaking and exhibiting at look hear in newcastle too. will tell you about all that tomorrow.

BON_V

our adults-only adventure starts in a few hours! as predicted i’m still rushing around doing one billion things (is it possible to give yourself home pedicure in under 30 mins? i’m about to find out…). i’ll report back soon, hopefully with an armful of inspiration and a sordid tale or two to tell.

stay warm! x

harvest exhibition

harvest_1harvest_2harvest_3harvest_5harvest_4harvest_6aharvest_6harvest_7

some photos from the exhibition of the work i made while i was at harvest. most of the pieces are one-off, and made with hand cut paper, and a bit of screen-printing too.

i’m back at home now, and surprisingly, i am loving it. although my stay at harvest was a great experience, it was good to realise that i am very happy in my own studio for now. i actually missed day-to-day occurrences like cats running across my keyboard, half-eaten apples left on my desk and background noise of kids fighting. maybe those things actually add to my work? plus i now have kristina helping me out – for the first time this year i feel things are close to be to be under control. we are meeting deadlines and getting an astounding amount of work done. it feels sooooo good.

so good in fact, that raph and i have treated ourselves to an impromptu adults-only trip to tokyo – we leave next week! having already been on one child-free overseas trip myself this year it feels excessively indulgent, but i do feel like we have worked so hard past few years and truly deserve it.

my excitement is building with every second!

ps exhibition was for one day only and has now closed, but i still have some pieces available for sale. please contact me if you are interested.

* puppy-sat:

levi

his name is levi and he is a 14 week old italian greyhound. he was a barrel of fun (look – he is smiling for the camera in this shot). the kids were mental for him and even loved his sharp little bites. it’s stirred up my buying-a-new-kitten impulses. i may have even done something about it too. more on that later.

* discovered a new cookbook:

flavour_thesaurus

it was the awesome cover art that coerced my purchase of this from my local bookstore brunswick bound (so obsessed with pie-charts right now). as it turns out the flavour thesaurus is not only an inspiring resource, but also full of the most amusing and clever cookbook writing. author niki segnit is pure genius.

*prepared for markit:

markit_1markit_3markit_2

we are having our third ever market stall at markit at fed square this sunday. we have been making some new products for it too – printed tote bags, painted brooches and some baby quilts made from ‘vintage’ princess tina fabrics (some sneak peeks above – they have come up a treat!). as per usual everything is in limited numbers so we may or may not have them on our webstore afterwards. we will also be selling our existing stock (mobiles, cushion etc) all at special markit prices. plus, there are lots of other great stall holders there too including douglas and hope, michi girl and iggy and lou-lou. more details on the markit website.

and if you needed even more reason to go – due to the NGV 150th anniversary both the taco truck and beatbox kitchen will be at fed square. they actully start tomorrow and will be there all weekend – serving from early til late in the night.

* went to 2 exhibitions:

bleem

holey hole by misha hollenbach at utopian slumps and bleemweaver by brianna martin at mr kitly. both are completly different – misha with his amazing gigantic photocopy collages, organic ceramics and slices of neon, and brianna with her beautiful hand-woven scarfs and bags (colours so fantastic!) – but both equally great and worth checking out.

holey hole at utopian slumps, ground floor, 33 guilford lane, melbourne. until 18th june

bleem weaver at mr. kitly, 1st floor, 381 sydney road, brunswick. until 8th june

* stayed at the lark house in daylesford:

lark_house_1lark_house_2lark_house_3lark_house_4

technically this was actually last weekend, but i still had to write about it because it was so damn nice. allison from lark has done a stand-out job of setting up a guest house that is cosy, beautifully decorated (gorgeous wallpaper! vintage posters! patchwork quilts!) and kid-friendly. plus it sleeps a lot of peeps and is walking distance to all the good things daylesford township has to offer. i dragged my mum along with us for her outstanding company (and willingness to stop at country opp-shops). it was great to get out of the city and enjoy some country air and the prettiness of daylesford in autumn. you can see lots of pics of the house here, and if you would like to stay in it you can book here.

apart from the above good things, my past 2 weeks have actually been pretty crap. i dont think my planets are aligned at the moment. but things are looking up, and i have many more good things to post about in the near future. til then, enjoy your weekend, might see you at markit!

seoul

seoul_19seoul_18seoul_1seoul_4seoul_5seoul_6seoul_13seoul_10seoul_17seoul_22seoul_3seoul_20seoul_21seoul_9seoul_14seoul_2

it’s been just over a week since i got back. it feels like a life-time ago.

staying with em was a dream – despite being 28 floors up in the middle of a huge city, i felt like i was on a resort. after a few days away i easily slipped back into a pattern of pre-child life with just the occasional feeling of guilt. i read books, drank martinis, slept-in, shopped, meandered and took my time doing everything (one day i spent a whole hour just getting dressed! such indulgence!). i even did things in my sketchbook – not because i had too, but because i was too inspired not too.

as per usual i forgot all about taking photos of sights, and everything i took is colour and pattern. not sure if it shows a true representation of seoul of not, but it shows the bits i like. this included:

* craft shopping at namdemun markets – once you navigate through the usual bootleg touritsy fare (still fun) – it’s serouisly mind-blowing. like tokyu hands but across a whole district. i’m talking multi-level shops full of every type of paper and paper product imaginable. multi-level department-store-size buildings full of every type of jewelry making supply imaginable. stores in laneways with layers and layers of cotton quilts in the best colours ever. little corner stores selling just super cute kids shoes. there is even a fresh flower market on a 3rd floor in the middle of it all. (tricky to find – but there are always tourist info helpers around you can ask). it was hard to digest. luckly it was opposite were my sister lived so i was able to visit everyday.

* exploring hongdae – reminded me of harajuku, with its cute winding streets and small boutiques and nice cafes. my favourite shop was “i think so”. best stationary selection EVER.

* eating korean BBQ in myeong-dong, and tasting the gigantic array of kimchi in the basement of fancy shinsegae department store

* mental toy museum we happened across in insa-dong. worth every cent of the $1 entry fee – strange arrangments of worn out dolls, plastic figures, vintage packaging and hand-drawn art.

* visiting the MMMG store and cafe in anguk-dong. so cute – these guys really do excel in everything they do.

* hanging out with elfi and ferdi (my sisters exceptionally cute daschunds)

i thought seoul could be my second toyko, but it was actually very different. more conservative but also more chaotic (i like a bit of chaos). i loved the aesthetic i found in their design too – quite understated but very considered, and so beautiful.

now, i am well and truly back to reality. over the next 4 weeks i have to complete work for three big briefs (thanks JW!), give two talks, make artwork for two group shows, make new products for our may markit stall and participate in one (very public) forum. and there is even more to come after that. big and exciting things too. more on all of that soon!

happy weekend! x
