i’m back…

Saturday, July 17th, 2010

and still coming back down to earth and feeling slightly surreal after our tokyo rendezvous. as expected it was amazing, inspiring, delicious and super-fun, and also at times sweaty, exhausting and exasperating (mostly due to travelling with small children in a huge and humid megalopolis with A LOT of stairs). i am still sorting through my photos but will be posting about all my favourite parts and discoveries soon.

in the meantime here is one of  my favourite discoveries – textile company tafca.  i happened across a display they had put together in parco books (pictured below), where i couldn’t resist buying a scarf in the “dancing” print (also shown below). most of their site is in japanese, but there is an english description in the “concept” section which is so sweet – have a read here

more tokyo soon!

p.s this is my 100th post!! who would have thought? not me! as i have said many times before i am loving the blog-life – apart from providing a way to show new work its also been a great form of therapy and support for me. thanks to anyone out there for who takes the time to read my excessively wordy babble xoxo

rounding off nicely

Saturday, July 3rd, 2010

i am major countdown mode for our holiday – in a few days i will be exploring new toyko neighbourhoods, eating onigiri from 7-11 and buying ridiculously cute homewares. its been perfect timing with work in the studio too, as today we were able to sign off on lots of recent jobs: a project with japanese company GAS (designing credit cards! more soon!!), textile print for local store grace, an illustration for monthly column in readers digest and the justine clarke tour posters and advertising. and the absolute icing on the cake was a final approval for a very long and equally as frustrating job i have been working for a few months now (have mentioned it before) – cant tell you the relief it gave me to see that leave my inbox forever.

leah, noe and miso will be holding the fort while we are away, and there is still lots to keep them busy too (well maybe not miso – he will just be getting spoilt rotten by our house-sitters).

one thing i will be sad to miss out on while we are away is MARKit at fed square – a market focusing on illustrative design. not only do i love a good market, but it’s our first ever time taking part in one! we will have all our products at special market prices, plus some other goodies too. and there are lots of other great stall holders as well including zaishu, third drawer down and the lovely victoria mason jewelery. its on sunday 12th of july, 9am -5pm.

markit_logo

speaking of our products, the love tree was featured in july/august issue of inside out. thanks to styling genius vanessa colyer tay  and photography genius  sharyn cairns – its never looked so nice!

and one more thing to check out… irene grishin-selzer (aka iggy and lou-lou) has a solo show of new ceramic works at outre gallery titled “i threw a kiss in the ocean“. the show opened tonight (was planning to go but unfortunately 2 grumpy kids, rain and a ton of washing made it tricky) and is on until 18th july. i really love irene’s work and have no doubt her new things will be beautiful.

igs

well, thats about it for me for now. i may have neatly finished off my work, but now the family pre-holiday organisation frenzy begins – pack everything for everyone, clean the house, write instructions for house sitter, set auto-respond on my email, give miso some extra pats, and oh, dont forget to buy cat food. and plane snacks. and something to sedate the children (JOKING). and remember to get to sleep in time for a 4.00 am wake-up to catch the flight. geez, my mental lists are already getting the better of me.

i am fairly sure i will be blogging while i am away (although our laptop literally just died on raph as i was writing this post!), but if not, i have a good excuse and rest assured there will be plenty of japan adventure stories & pics on my return.

Great Big World sneak peek

Thursday, May 27th, 2010

some quick screen grabs of the new Justine Clarke DVD ”Great Big World” we recently art directed:

Picture 8Picture 5Picture 11Picture 9Picture 10Picture 14Picture 15Picture 22Picture 23

as well as drawing all the animations, we also created  all the sets, props and wardrobe, and along with everyone else came up with concepts for each song. there are 15 clips on the DVD, so it was huge and exciting project for us, made all the better by getting to work with the absolute awesome-ness that is justine and her family. truly she is the best. and not forgetting to mention her equally as great manager sonia as well, who’s idea it was to get me involved in the first place

and while i am handing out props a huge chunk of them must also go to director matt weston from syndicate films. he was so much fun to work & hang out with, did not  throw one tantrum, and never said no to any of our crazy requests (unless he really had too, and then he did it very politely, and made us laugh at the same time). he was a gentleman from start to finish, and, particularly given our tight budget and deadline, i really feel like he has made the impossible happen, and done a damn fine job of it too. cheers to you matt.

the DVD is out july (i feel a giveaway coming on) through ABC kids, and justine is also touring around australia in july and august. see her site for details.

“infinite shape of rainbows” w.i.p

Saturday, April 10th, 2010

i am almost done! all i have to do is finish painting the new wooden dolls & mushrooms. this seems to be some kind of record for me – usually i am waiting for paint to dry as people arrive at the opening night!  yesterday evening there was a real rainbow outside our house – surely a good omen?

happy easter!

chillsville

due to raph being away (with beatbox at boogie festival) i was happily forced into having a few days off. we had lots of easter egg hunts and hot cross buns and it was nice. this combined with looking at my new favourite blog chillsville (thanks ed!), had helped ease my stress levels a little.

however, here i am today back at my computer and back to feeling completely freaked out. anyone got any tips on how to stop time or add an extra day in the week?

(unbelievably appropriate rabbit pic from chillsville)

scrambling

Wednesday, March 31st, 2010

i hate to start with another yet another whine, but these past 2 weeks i just cant keep up. we have been so busy day and night, weekday and weekend – i feel like i am scrambling to do anything and everything. there are a million emails/messages unanswered, the cupboards are empty, the washing is piling up a mile high (clothes and dishes), children are feeling neglected and i am feeling like there is no way on earth i am ever ever going to get it all done.

what has been making us so busy? well, there was the justine clarke film shoot, (which was a manic and amazing experience), a decent-sized freelance job for a major banking corporation (thanks jacky winter), delivery of tiny mammoth AW range into stores, on-going illustrations for a UK published DIY book (think bunnings catalogue’s, but a nicer, colour version) and not to mention artworks/preparations for my very-fast-approaching exhibition at lamington drive

although i do love all my work equally, i have been most excited with the latter. i have titled the show “the infinite shape of rainbows”. all the works are going to be brightly-multi-coloured or black & white. i am also looking at opposites. so far its working out pretty well, and i have been producing pieces in a feverishly ecstatic state – often completely losing track of the time (oh look, its 1.35am, how did that happen?) who knows if this will translate into the pieces actually being any good, but at least i am having fun making them.

the show opens on the 15th of april – no doubt i will posting more in depth about it soon.

some other things that have been getting me through my busy-ness

my sister sent me an awesome package -

em_package

she just moved from hong kong to seoul in the last week, and sent me this bunch of lovely korean-designed stationary to tempt me into visiting (not much tempting needed!). not only did this make me feel very happy, but also equally lame – i am totally crap at sending packages (owe you one too gini) and have had her birthday present waiting to be sent on my desk for 6 weeks now. she has just moved her whole life from one country to another and she can still get it together to send me an exceptionally thoughtful and very cute package. sigh. how did i miss out on those genes?

i met megan morton.

homelovecover

oh. my. god. what a lady. warm, heart-felt, hilarious, fascinating and not to mention ridiculously talented and enterprising. plus mother of 3 kids! she has a new blog and also a new book (above) out titled “homelove” through penguin.

sarah showed me this. sarah has been working in our studio on casual basis for a little while now. she is awesome and i am beginning to think we cant live without her. especially when she bring things like this into my life. if you are into english accents, cats talking and need a good laugh this is the video for you.

our house was featured on design files today -

orpin5

once again thanks go out to lucy feagins – you and your blog does such great things for melbourne! and thanks also for making my house look nice, it was worth the 16hr clean-up (stayed like that for all of 20 mins once children were let back in…) also while at design files check out  tinker by print inks beautiful new homewares range.

we went to raph’s nan’s 91st birthday. there are few things that make you feel better than a sunday lunch in the country on a beautiful autumn afternoon. we also went fishing here (tyke said it was the best day of his life!)

justine w.i.p

Wednesday, March 17th, 2010

the justine clarke “great big world” dvd film shoot is this week and our studio is in a wardrobe, prop and costume-making frenzy. i have been fulfilling my art director role by drawing impossible pictures and then telling everyone else what to do – leah, sarah and noe have been the ones making it happen. you are absolute gems ladies – thank you!

anglesshipbutterflysarah_paintingwavesfish_cloudspaint_fight

oh and ari has been helping too. pant-less as per usual. thanks ari x
