the melbourne launch appears to have been a big success. although i spent most of the night feeling completely frazzled and overwhelmed, there was much love in the room and i have had many reports of everyone having a great time! the picture above  is of my lovely shop girl for the evening alice oehr (thanks alice!). that pile of books was all but gone by the end of the night, so a big thank-you to all who came.

now it is your turn SYDNEY-SIDERS! please come and help me celebrate this thursday the 8th of november at the P.A.M. store, 20 Burton St, Darlinghurst, 6pm-9pm. as with the melbourne launch, there will be a free tote bag with every book purchase, and the first 20 bags come with some extra special surprises (different surprises to the melbourne bags!). there will again be refreshments thanks to cake wines (who also have a new wine bar just around the corner!).

again, this event is open to everyone, but please RSVP to FleurJacobs@hardiegrant.com.au so we can keep track of numbers.

hope to see you there!

PS here is a little preview of something else i’ve been up too….

we have been back for just over week and like all good holidays our trip now feels like a distant memory. we succeeded in relaxing, eating, lapping up the (mostly) good weather, much swimming and a touch of family-style adventuring too. i also succeeded in getting sick on the second day with some kind of hideous cold. it felt like a year’s worth of sickness in one hit, and sucked. but our nice hotel room, good room service and being forced to relax made me feel better in no time.

highlights of this trip: getting caught in the loudest/scariest/most exhilarating tropical thunderstorm whilst eating at an open air restaurant in KL; home-cooked lunch with raph’s crazy, awesome malay family; meeting up with parts of our melbourne family in penang; exploring langkawi in our hire car; watching and hearing great hornbills every morning and evening; seeing monkey’s – lots of them; raph convincing every street hawker he could to give him cooking lessons and recipes; watching tyke and ari grow as human beings.

here is a mere snippet of the 700 or so photos we all took:

since our return things have been FULL ON – for both of us. my book launch is fast approaching, as too are raph’s new trucks – looking like it could be a double launch. more details to be announced very, very soon.

i’m approaching the finish line with my book. i’m so glad to have it in my sights. it has still been taking up all my living and breathing moments, but all worth it. in between worrying about deadlines it has been nothing short of amazing – a completely different experience than what i thought. one of the best parts has been working with ms.michlle mackintosh. she is very talented and rare gem of a lady – part book-designer extraordinaire, part design-process councillor. plus she makes a very tasty lunch and an excellent cup of tea.

i am very much looking forward to life being normal again. in particular: wasting time on the internet, watching TV, going to bed before midnight, seeing my friends (i’ve missed you guys!), having a few drinks (probably more) and not having one thousand million things going through my head at any given moment.

thanks for bearing with with me. i’ll be back in full blog mode soon x

new work

Friday, March 9th, 2012

there’s been quite a bit going on here, albeit at a more relaxed pace in line with my new working order. here’s some recently completed projects:

1. field trip: jacky winter don’t sleep. in between adding a whole new section to their ever expanding creative suite of peeps and starting a consultancy business, jeremy has also curated a pretty amazing conference – field trip. there will be more expansive post on this in the near future (as i am one of the speakers. gulp), but for now, it’s just about the artwork – which i was lovingly asked to do in a 3 day turn around. but, you know, i don’t mind a bit of pressure, so it all went well, and i’m pleased with results. plus who could resist a brief where i got to draw my favourite tools of the trade and put faces on them too? more details on the conference here.

2. poster for stonefield: i actually designed this end of last year. i think it’s being sold as a print, i’m not exactly sure by where or by whom (useful much?), but i really liked it so i wanted to put it out there. and if you don’t know, stonefield is an all-girl band made up of four (very young and talented) sisters from country victoria. if rock is your thing you should check them out. they are pretty kick-ass.

3. artpark journal: i was asked by all-around-ace mr.paul mcneil to submit something for artpark journal #3. no brief, just whatev’s. this is what i did. you can get a copy of artpark journal at various places around the traps, and also through their webstore. it’s FREE (although you do have to pay a tiny postage fee if you get it online).

4. “geometrical” gocco print: i made this for the homemakers market last weekend at the richmond weekender (which was so nice btw). it’s the most multi-coloured of gocco prints i have ever attempted, and i’m liking it’s vibe. it’s an edition of 20 (8 on craft paper, 12 on white paper), they are just over A6 size and priced at $17. i have a few left, if anyone out there is interested please email me.

in other news… this weekend i’m making my annual pilgrimage to golden plains. can’t wait. i’ll be working the till in the beatbox on sunday (mostly likely in a desperately hangover state), so please come and visit if your around (taco truck will be in attendance too!). happy weekend!

summer’s end

summer_6summer_1summer_11summer_9summer_4summer_3summer_2summer_17summer_12summer_13summer_15summer_8

although we have at least a month of warm days left, summer officially ends next week. in a town where our erractic weather is often the topic of conversation, we managed to score a pretty perfect one, full of blues skies and hot-but-not-too-hot days, with a few thunderstorms thrown in for good measure.

so far it’s been filled with the usual fun this season brings – BBQ’s, parties, beach, swimming, jenga, adventure’s with friends and many drinks. tyke got to see his favourite band play at his first festival, ari learned to swim properly, raph perfected and fed us many new recipes, and i got to relax with a capital R. and for this first time i felt there was lots of kids around. i liked that a lot.

a few cooler, darker mornings reminiscent of autumn are creeping their way in now, which i love, but i will be sad to see this summer end.

2012: changes

HNY

i’m just back in the studio. not much work taking place so far, just a whole lotta cleaning up. and while cleaning, i’ve been thinking about 2012 might bring. it feels quite different to other years – for a good reason.

in 2011, we were lucky – raph’s business’s have been successful, and it’s changed our life quite a bit. after 10 years of my business being the main supporter of our family, we now had another income. it initally came as quite a shock to me. up until recently, our working lives were pretty much based around me being able to do my work. of course, none of it would have happened without raph, who ran all the business goings-on, but who also diligently picked up the kids most days, did the supermarket runs, and was generally there at my beck and call whenever i needed him. i was one spoilt (but very hard working) lady.

but now, this can no longer be the case – unfortunately successful hospitality business’s do not cater for the beck and call of a spoilt wifey. at first, i tried cracking a pretty good princess tantrum for about, ohhh… 6 months. but it didn’t get me anywhere. i also had a good shot at being super-mum, trying to handle much more of the domestic duties, and working insane hours to compensate. but that just made me even more grumpy.

so after many discussion’s about how we can make this new situation work, raph put this to me: “you have worked your ass off for 15 years, and now this is your opportunity work less and just do the things you want to do”. at first, i was outraged. and silent. hard work is my thing – i love it, how could i stop doing what i do? but after a few weeks of consideration, i’m almost at peace with this idea. i’m even starting to like it.

i’ve relaised it doesn’t mean i will no longer be working hard, it does mean i can put more energy into the projects i really believe in, rather than saying yes to everything that comes my way because we need the money to pay our mortgage (yes, up until now i’ve still been working on things i didn’t love because basically we have needed the cash). what an insanely privileged situation i could potentially be in.

i’m so used to working the other way it actually feels a bit wrong, so to convince myself, here are some positive things that this new way of working will hopefully achieve in 2012 for me (resolutions of sorts i guess):

quality not quantity: as i said above – spending more time on the projects i’m really into, and creating for those projects the best work i can possibly deliver. this will also mean i might have to find “no” in my vocabulary from time to time. uh-oh.

more time with my kids: although i don’t do too badly in this department at the mo’, i really want hang with ari as much as i can before he starts school in 2013.

becoming a domestic goddess: our house up until now has generally been pure chaos, but shit under my house rule is going to be ORGANISED, and TIDY. i’m talking dinner menu’s planned 2 weeks in advance, grocery shopping being done online and delivered, a list of chores for each child to be completed every night and a pantry full of neat rows of labelled jars. and that’s just this week.

getting my license: yes, at the ripe old age of 38, i’m a loser who still does not drive. i’m actually quite happy not driving, but it does make getting 2 kids around sort of tricky. i have been taking intermittent lessons for 2 years now, and doing ok (except for parking. i suck at parking), but there is something in me that is just terrified of taking the test. i’m going to get hypnosis or anything else possible (suggestions?) to get over it and start driving for real. and i’m writing it on here for all your public eyes to read so it becomes a proper commitment out there in the world.

more things for me: more gardening, more bike-riding, more opp-shopping, more getting fit (with this life-changing lady), more time-wasting time on the internet, more reading books, more long lunches with wine, more trips to the library, more watching dvd’s, more sleeping. all the things i have struggled to find time to do before, i’m going to do more of now.

so there it is, my life laid bare for 2012. it all seems so positive and indulgent right now, but i guess everything could still go belly up and i’ll be back to slaving my nights away (which you know, i don’t actually mind every now and again). ah the joys of a husband and wife both being self-employed (and crazy).

what’s up for you guys in 2012?

points of frustration (today)

Tuesday, November 29th, 2011

* ari’s 4.52am wake up call.

* my studio being in a perpetual mess for the last 6 months. i just can’t seem to get it clean. it constantly makes me feel (even more) disorganised.

* tio wants to play when i have deadlines.

* there are one thousand small jobs i need to finish, and for some reason the multi-tasking part of my brain is already on holidays.

* raph’s paper work all over my desk, answering calls for taco truck/beatbox kitchen all day.

* tyke forgetting his goggles for swimming, and only realising once we had arrived at school. i yelled at him for not being responsible for his things, he cried, i felt awful, so went home and collected them. no lesson’s learned there for any one.

* that this time of year is SO CRAZY. between raph and my schedules we don’t get to see each other properly until saturday night around 10pm.

* that i use my blog for venting. sorry about that.

we’ve been on a road trip…

we spent a few days in port fairy and then made our way to the grampians. it was simple and easy and relaxing. we took our time and stopped at skate parks and country opp-shops and old school bakeries along the way (as well as lunch at this fine establishment). we did lots of walks – through old volcano’s, amazing waterfalls and an olive grove too. we saw lots of wildlife – kangaroos, wallabies, emus, an echidna and a koala – even a red-bellied black snake (twice!). i did some bird-watching too – i wanted most of all to see a gang gang cockatoo, but sadly only got to hear them in the distance.

my only complaints - in halls gap, we were completely wroughted by the general store (note to self: take own food next time), and i was momentarily disgusted by the lack of bourgey cafe’s (so first world!). i got over that pretty quick though.

all in all – we had a super, great, fun family times.

i needed this holiday like nothing else. i know i write a lot about being tired, before we left i was so exhausted and was wondering if it’s all worth it. it’s awful to feel like that. but the holiday made everything ok, and now i’m ready to do it all again. even have a a few new ideas up my sleeve.

how are you going out there?

i learnt that:

- working on your own book is actually a form of creative torture – i have been obsessive and putting way too much pressure on myself, causing ridiculously late nights and much grumpiness. aside from grumpiness – it’s so much fun, and i could do it forever!

- working with cut paper is a remedy for above torture (project for frankie – thanks for your help bonnie = amazing!)

- so is drawing with your kids

- and playing with watercolours and trace-lettering as well

- as cute as he is, tio does not make much of a studio assistant. he is excellent company though, and very good at catching flies (and also eating them. gross).

also working on: stage visuals for upcoming justine clarke tour, some christmas graphics for chadstone, a health food store logo, a wine label, fete signs for ari’s daycare and more new prints for irony. it’s always a mixed bag in here…

i’m off to reward myself with some ebay browsing/purchasing. happy friday!

tokyo_1tokyo_2tokyo_3tokyo_4tokyo_5tokyo_6tokyo_8tokyo_7tokyo_9tokoy_7

it was interesting seeing how things have changed since march’s events. on the surface not much at all, but then you notice the fridge lights at lawson are not on (in an effort to save power), and that there is lots of talk about radio-active food, and a distinct lack of tourists too. and then, there was also the 4.0 aftershock we experienced on thursday night. that was a definite wake-up call.

despite all this, it was still the toyko i love, full of inspiration and awesomeness and friends and the best food on the planet (i think we ate 6 meals a day). our 5 days were action packed – we discovered some new spots (narukiyo izakaya – the best!), visited the tokyo art book fair (heaven), drank litre’s of iced lattes and biru (not together) and had some good meetings too. despite our hectic schedule raph and i managed to squeeze in lots of hanging out / sleeping-in which was a real treat.

now,  it all feels like a dream… but its nice to be home and safe and with our kids in cold but earthquake-free melbourne. and i’m also busy – so busy! freelance work coming out of ears (love it) and next week i am participating in 3 events as part of the state of design festival. later in august i am speaking and exhibiting at look hear in newcastle too. will tell you about all that tomorrow.
