rounding off nicely

Saturday, July 3rd, 2010

i am major countdown mode for our holiday – in a few days i will be exploring new toyko neighbourhoods, eating onigiri from 7-11 and buying ridiculously cute homewares. its been perfect timing with work in the studio too, as today we were able to sign off on lots of recent jobs: a project with japanese company GAS (designing credit cards! more soon!!), textile print for local store grace, an illustration for monthly column in readers digest and the justine clarke tour posters and advertising. and the absolute icing on the cake was a final approval for a very long and equally as frustrating job i have been working for a few months now (have mentioned it before) – cant tell you the relief it gave me to see that leave my inbox forever.

leah, noe and miso will be holding the fort while we are away, and there is still lots to keep them busy too (well maybe not miso – he will just be getting spoilt rotten by our house-sitters).

one thing i will be sad to miss out on while we are away is MARKit at fed square – a market focusing on illustrative design. not only do i love a good market, but it’s our first ever time taking part in one! we will have all our products at special market prices, plus some other goodies too. and there are lots of other great stall holders as well including zaishu, third drawer down and the lovely victoria mason jewelery. its on sunday 12th of july, 9am -5pm.

speaking of our products, the love tree was featured in july/august issue of inside out. thanks to styling genius vanessa colyer tay  and photography genius  sharyn cairns – its never looked so nice!

and one more thing to check out… irene grishin-selzer (aka iggy and lou-lou) has a solo show of new ceramic works at outre gallery titled “i threw a kiss in the ocean“. the show opened tonight (was planning to go but unfortunately 2 grumpy kids, rain and a ton of washing made it tricky) and is on until 18th july. i really love irene’s work and have no doubt her new things will be beautiful.

igs

well, thats about it for me for now. i may have neatly finished off my work, but now the family pre-holiday organisation frenzy begins – pack everything for everyone, clean the house, write instructions for house sitter, set auto-respond on my email, give miso some extra pats, and oh, dont forget to buy cat food. and plane snacks. and something to sedate the children (JOKING). and remember to get to sleep in time for a 4.00 am wake-up to catch the flight. geez, my mental lists are already getting the better of me.

i am fairly sure i will be blogging while i am away (although our laptop literally just died on raph as i was writing this post!), but if not, i have a good excuse and rest assured there will be plenty of japan adventure stories & pics on my return.

webstore is open!!! and something else momentous too

Monday, March 15th, 2010

yes! finally! after what feels like an eternity our webstore is up and open and tested and functioning and ready to service all your shopping needs! currently it features all of the beci orpin products, but will soon also have a tiny mammoth and prints section too. have a look (or perhaps even a shop!) at www.beciorpin.com/shoppe/

webstore

thanks (once again) to rex at blisterfinger for helping us get it all together. i am fairly sure sticking pins in his eyeballs would have been a far more pleasant experience. you truly are a great and patient person.

and my other momentous news – my blog is now one year old! whilst i know one year is a relatively small achievement in terms of blogging capacity (especially when compared to some others impressive catalogue of years),but  its personally a great milestone for myself.

when we hap-hazardly added a blog section when updating my site last year, i had no idea i would love writing and posting as much as i have. i would go so far as to say its a weird kind of therapy for me, and perhaps even made me a nicer person. thanks so much to anyone who has read/commented/even just paid the slightest bit of attention to my blog. i am so very flattered that you would be interested in looking at my work, reading my often strange family stories and enduring my often annoying whinges.

raise your virtual glasses for toast – here’s to another year!

whitley artwork and beci orpin products!

Friday, October 30th, 2009

this week i have been struggling with a post-birthday hangover, a cold, feelings of ground-hog day after 6pm (parents out there will hear me!), endless tiredness (ari decided to start waking up at night again), leah being away  and a more hectic-than-usual workload. its not been the easiest of weeks. if i didn’t feel so lucky to be doing what i do, i would be preparing one big therapeutic whinge-post right now. but let the whinging cease here!

new whitley album “go fourth find mammoth” was released today, adorned with my artwork

 whitely_artwork_finalBACK_bloginside_blogcd_blog

i had free brief for this one, which sometimes can be a blessing and a curse. in this case it was a blessing – i got to listen to music by one of my most favourite people and design my interpretation of it. and to my relief he liked it too. whitley is also touring in november… on stage he is charming, witty, and engaging. and of course he can sing like nothing else too. you should go if you have the chance.

also, after what has felt like a long wait… this week our new beci orpin line started trickling into stores. here are a selection of product shots we took recently -

beci_1beci_2beci_3

my web shop is still not up… but getting very close. in the meantime, we have lots of nice retail stockist (compiling a list which will post later) and look out for press in frankie, real living and inside out, as well as giveaways coming up on the design files, three thousand and also here.

see you later – i’m off to bake friday-night brownies and BBQ in this weird melbourne evening weather. perfect cure for a hectic week!

in the studio today…

googly-eyed mayhem and other goings on

Monday, August 31st, 2009

with my work (still feels criminal calling it “work”) i find things come in waves – some weeks we spend lots of our time researching, other weeks it’s putting together boring (but important) things like specsheets and linesheets, and sometimes its doing whole bunch of different stuff… but these past 2 weeks have been solid, heavy-duty designing. its been exhausting and draining, but also most satisfying and exciting

aside from all the kit excitement, we have been working on yet another cover for built by wendy sew u book 3 (that’s the third cover we have done! this one is definitely going through though), as well as new yardage prints for her fall 2010 range, final artwork for new whitley album and promo materials (pretty excited about this one!), my first illustration job through jacky winter (cant say for whom for as yet), a tee-shirt design for my friend’s home-birth cause (read more about it here), re-designing the logo and branding for ari’s daycare (a freebie – fun one though), finalising prints for jethro and jackson, and working on new papercuts and prints for a group show i have coming up in brisbane.

and all the while, the final samples for my new line have arrived and are being photographed, as well as the new tiny mammoth summer collection coming in, being swing-tagged, sorted into orders and sent out to our stores. and just to make this a little bit harder – as part of the collection i designed a patchwork bear with googly eyes, which proved to be a best seller, so lucky noe spent a good few days sewing eyes on bears and tee-shirts. she was going googly-crazy by the end, at which stage i promised never to design anything with googly eyes again (i had my fingers crossed behind my back – sorry noe, i just could not make such a promise!)

needless to say it has been a proper madhouse around here.

here are some photos of the googly-eyed mayhem and some of the orders waiting to go out -

and here are some of my fav piece’s from the new collection… tiny mammoth website update coming very soon!

happy friday everyone!

hello jacky winter!

Wednesday, July 29th, 2009

jw_logo

as from today, i am officially part of illustration agency jacky winter! needless to say i am honoured and excited to be part of this great agency – ever since i saw the first “jacky winter field guide” i have been endlessly impressed by their group of artist and also the way the agency promotes itself. i will be in fine company with the likes of we buy your kids (biddy maroney easily one of my fav aus talents), niels oeltjen, dylan martorell and jonathan zawada, just to name a few. rebecca wolkenstein will still be representing me in sydney, on behalf of jacky winter. (b.t.w – rebecca being the super-star she is has also joined forces with jacky winter to form new agency rock of eye - check it out - their line up is pretty epic)

on another note, this past weekend my folk face cushion was in the age sunday life magazine. it was part of the my space section, this week featuring author vanessa holle’s house. i was particulary psyched to see the cushion in someone’s home (especially in a house that i really liked the look of – i have been hunting one of those arabia heart bowls for ages!) and also flattered she said the cushion “becomes a piece of art itself” – shucks! thanks vanessa!

sunday_lifefolk_face1

i originally made the folk face cushion as part of a princess tina range, but we are releasing them again as part of new beci orpin line next month.

also, we will be showing tiny mammoth winter 2010 collection over the next few days at  life in style tradeshow in melbourne. if anyone out there is around come and say hello!

lots of things

Sunday, July 26th, 2009

there has been so much going on and things i would like to write about lately, i am not even sure where to start. i had intentions of doing several blog entries this week, all which were cast aside when current hectic nature of my life prevailed and took over. anyway… after an exceptionally lovely sunday afternoon/evening spent enjoying pimms & lemonade, raph’s cooking and winter sunshine with friends in our backyard, here i am trying to figure out what to write about first… sigh.

well, lets start in chronoligical order…. so first, my favourite things from my design ventures last weekend. this is not a design market turned out to be really great – so impressed with quality and variety of products! my favourite things were pillowcases from sunday morning design (see below), super soft cotton tights from OKOK, bespoke quilts from skapa bilda and height charts from co-op, who shared a stall with the foundry, which also has a great selection of other beautiful paper products (check out these from katsumi komagata. mind blowingly awesome.)

sundaymorning

to be honest, i found design made trade a little disappointing… feels like organisers are still finding their feet, and couldn’t decide who best to pitch it too – retail or industry. but, it did lead me to discover arkit kit studios and houses. the house designs were simple but so nicely considered, and finishes where beautiful. although i am no expert in the world of architecture, this seems like quite a reasonably-priced way of attaining an architect-designed home.

arkit

after briefly talking to owner craig chatman (well, at least, i think it was him?), who showed me a 3 bedroom plus studio model, i immediately started to conjure up visions of my custom design arkit module on a block of land somewhere in semi-isolation on rye back beach. as soon as i got home i was on realestate.com looking up vacant blocks, working out how i could run our studio from down there, as well as how to convince leah and noe to commute for 4 hours a day to our new beach home. i can get very easily carried away. i soon realised that actually, i loved my house and neighborhood, and the beach house will just have to wait. hopefully, not for too long.

next up – our manic week in the studio (am i forever stating things are manic in our studio? sorry if so). as well as working on new prints for built by wendy, preparing for built by wendy book 4, and designing new prints for sleepware label jethro and jackson, this week majority of our tiny mammoth winter 2010 samples came in. receiving final samples is both exciting and nerve-wracking – its the accumulation of at least 4 months of work, and by this stage, if things are not right, its too late to change. we had a few disasters (its the norm), but on the whole, i am REALLY EXCITED about how this collection has turned out. unfortunately, i wont be able to post any pictures until collection goes into store next feb, but i will be posting about tiny mammoth summer collection shortly (instores in august!)

also, tiny mammoth got a nice shoutout in current issue of ANORAK magazine. this is the best magazine for kids out there - i often talk about how hard it is to find interesting, independently-minded stuff for kids, so when i discovered anorak magazine, i immediately subscribed! its based in the UK, and put together by rob lowe (of supermundane fame) and cathy olmedillas. it comes out 4 times a year, and every issue has a theme, (this one is the bike issue – check out “my first bike” page for extra laughs!). its full of great illustrations, funny stories and activities. you can subscribe direct through their site, or you can buy in australia from kidostore.

anorak

this week we have also been working on final pieces of my new beci orpin line – its also getting exciting! all our products are almost ready, and we will be showing them to retailers in august, and hope to have them instore in september. we are also currently building our own online shop, which will sell a selection of beci orpin product, as well as a few other surprises. this should be launched end of august too.

and last but not least, ari and i went for a walk yesterday morning, and i was delighted to notice the first blossoms starting to appear on trees. i am obsessed by the weather, and find the change of season exceptionally exciting (even when global warming is making everything a bit out of whack). i think winter into spring is the best one too…

ari_walk1blossom

have plenty more things to write about (including 2 particularly major announcements – no, i’m not having another baby), but will do so later in the week. enjoy your start to the week!

new books and new projects

Saturday, July 4th, 2009

if there is one thing i cant go past, or don’t mind going into a little bit of debt for… its books. i will happily give up spending money on clothes/make-up/other pampering type necessities for a book – unlike these things, books last forever, you never tire of them, get sick of there colour and decide you actually look bad in them.  i buy much of my books from opp-shops, as they are usually cheap and unique that way. but sometimes i also splash out and buy new ones too. here are some of my recent purchases

new_books_a

children’s rooms “stockholm”, jeu de paume - i was excited to discover that lark is now distributing paumes books in australia, however i brought this one from  arthur’s circus (full post coming on that amazing place next week). i have a feeling this will be the first of many paumes books added to my library (next on the list is london gardens)

new_books_3

yip and yap - this was a very cheap ebay purchase (yes addiction has continued, but its a little more under control now). who can resist hand-coloured photos of dressed-up kittens and puppies?

books_6

akazukin by yukari miyagi - yet another great publication from nieves -  japanese illustrator yukari miyagi’s version of little red riding hood. i didn’t know of ms. miyagi’s work before i brought this, and after some investigation was delighted to see she once did a cover of relax girls magazine in 2002 (as did, coincidentally, mike mills). illustrations, paper stock and printing all so beautiful. recommended to me by the lovely molly at metropolis books

new_books_1

mike mills – graphics, films - mike mills is one of the main reasons i am doing what i do, so to get an almost complete volume of his work to date is….. indescribable. i have been pouring over pages for days and will continue to do so for a long time. has also prompted me to track down copies of his movies thumbsucker and paperboys.

new_books_5

also this week, our studio has returned to fever pitch, with a flurry of freelance work and urgent deadlines. amongst other things, we worked on spring windows for decjuba, final cover  illustration for built by wendy SEW U book 3, an illustration for sesame magazine (will post a link once its up),  an illustration for ’short food’ magazine (edited by fantastically talented ed, a supplement of ‘condiment magazine’, to be launched in september), and also samples for my new line shave started to arrive. here is a sneak peek…

sneak

despite all the work we also managed to fit in a happy e.o.f.y staff lunch at hellenic republic… was delicious, in particular the saganaki with peppered figs. we love george! yeah?

R.I.P princess tina, hello beci orpin!

Friday, April 3rd, 2009

pt

this might be old news for some of you, but for those of you who dont know, princess tina has passed away. she lived a long and healthy 8 years, and made many friends along the way, but time has come for her to say good bye.

i decided at the end of last year i had enough of running a women’s clothing line, and wanted to concentrate on other things (such as tiny mammoth, more freelance work, artshows etc). i had a lot of fun making princess tina, and wanted to say a big THANK YOU to all the stores who supported us over the years and anyone who brought it, or even just liked it!

we are in the midst of designing a new line under my own name (well actually we already made a few products that went into store around christmas), which is more accessories, homewares and stationary-based. it will also feature some of our most popular princess tina items that we still get requests for, such as the raincloud necklace, folk face cushion, wooden brooches – might even be a sad tooth in there somewhere! as soon as we have an approx launch date (even trying to do launch party! woot!!!) will definitely let you know.

in other studio news, has been another week of working on things i am not allowed to write about yet… well except we are just finishing illustrations on book number 3 in the SEW U series of books with built by wendy. its looking nice. i am also working on a very exciting collaboration with a local cosmetics retailer. cant say whom as yet, but we have just confirmed everything this week and i think it will look awesome! cant wait to tell when i can!

and lastly – poor leah came off her bike on her way to work this morning and may have fractured her hip. this not only spells disaster for her, but also for me – leah is my absolute lifeline in the studio! we are still waiting to hear more news as to how bad her injury is, but in the meantime we are sending lots of get-well and repair-quick vibes her way. hope you are ok leah xoxo

LEAH UPDATE – she is fine and well, has no broken  bones, just one hell of a bruise.
