new finds

January 30th, 2012

i’m struggling through the last few days of the school holidays. everything was going pretty well until the end of last week, but right now i’ve had it up to here with children fighting, trying to conjure up creative activities (which usally ends in an ipad/iphone being shoved in their general direction and me shouting “fine“) and my pantry being in limbo thanks to the endless appetite of growing boys. plus raph has been sick (one part proper sickness, three parts man flu),  which is just down right annoying (i am quite the heartless cow when it comes to dealing with whimpering grown men). to top it all off, the cats have also been meeewing at me incessantly, wanting food/attention at any given part of the day.

i would say i’m currently feeling a bit like a household slave.

but, apart from that, life has been good. we’ve been enjoying the summer days, and i’ve had some incredibly exciting emails appear in my inbox the past week.  i’ve also been treating myself to a few nice things here and there (as a reward for enduring slavery). here are some of them:

new_5new_3new_2new_1new_6new_4

from the top:

- a new shelf. my studio has been in desperate need of more storage for a while now, so after an extensive search i fell in love with this one from codename tom (and it was on sale). i’m still in the slow process of re-arranging everything – a quick look of the top few shelves for now.

- pieces from some educational puzzles i brought from the oppy. not sure exactly what i will do with them, just rearranging them in different patterns on my desk is pretty good for the moment.

- vintage pennants: my new obsession. i brought the brunswick one for raph for his birthday (as part of my secret make raph’s-office-awesome plan), and i couldn’t resist anything that says “endless caverns”. from eBay.

- the best postcard in the world. a badly but beautifully hand-painted photo, with script that reads “ollie, age 12, 1913″. i can’t stop looking at it. from eBay again.

- a “room decorator”, i think from peru. the photo doesn’t do the colours justice – fluro pinks, minty greens, sulphury yellows. i have it hanging around my lounge room doorway and it makes me smile pretty much every time i walk under it.

- my new journals: “bear magic” and “lost girl”. i made them with ginkgo press (who made my last journals too). these are just samples for now, but i will have some on my webstore later in feb, and they will be for sale at other places too.

oh, there will still be a giveaway… soon! x

valentine’s day for hungry workshop

January 17th, 2012

this week, i’ve been kick-started into action with a few nice jobs from the JW crew. despite my new years resolution i said yes, because they were both awesome (and because there is this expensive dress i really want…)

something else i’ve been working on: a valentine’s day card for the hungry workshop. up until very recently these guys were sharing raph’s warehouse, so i’ve got to chat to these lovely folk on many occasion. it was cool to be able to work with them as well. even cooler still to see my design superbly letter pressed in fluoro inks. and despite being pretty anti-valentine’s day, i did like the theme given to me (lovestruck) and i really love how the card turned out.

the guys at malade athletics have also designed a card, and you can buy it along with mine and a hungry workshop designed card (so clever!) in a pack at the hungry workshop shop here.

another giveaway coming up next! x

mushrooms canisters for ganim store

January 13th, 2012

mushrooms_WIP_!

last year i was approached by an amazing women by the name of rae ganim. i say amazing as rae is someone whom i had heard and read about since i began my obsession with textile design almost 20 years ago. rae is also a textile designer, working with prue acton in the 1970’s and then going on start her own textile company. she has been cited as “one of the most important designers of the 8o’s”, has some of her pieces in the melbourne museum, and is even listed in the DIA hall of fame.

i was star struck to say the least. but lucky for me, rae is not only ridiculously talented, but also super awesome, and we got along very nicely indeed.

in october last year, rae opened her first shop - Ganim’s Store in fitzroy, full to the brim with all things colourful, beautiful and useful from around the world (not to mention her daughter sunday’s beautiful blankets too)

(images of ganim’s store by josie withers from this broadsheet article )

for her shop, rae and i designed these mushrooms canisters (the tops come off and you can put things inside!). they are all hand-painted and one off and varying sizes, and prices range from $90-$150. there are 6 in this first collection, with similar co-lab type products to follow throughout the year.

available exclusively from ganim’s store: 61 brunswick st, fitzroy, victoria. ph 03 9416 1001 (online coming soon too, but phone orders welcomed in the meantime).

also, today is my last post on the design files guest blog. i’ve been pretty chuffed/overwhelmed/freaked out by the amount of love i’ve been getting over there… thanks if you have been reading it. was a great way to start 2012.

happy friday xx

2012: changes

January 3rd, 2012

HNY

i’m just back in the studio. not much work taking place so far, just a whole lotta cleaning up. and while cleaning, i’ve been thinking about 2012 might bring. it feels quite different to other years – for a good reason.

in 2011, we were lucky – raph’s business’s have been successful, and it’s changed our life quite a bit. after 10 years of my business being the main supporter of our family, we now had another income. it initally came as quite a shock to me. up until recently, our working lives were pretty much based around me being able to do my work. of course, none of it would have happened without raph, who ran all the business goings-on, but who also diligently picked up the kids most days, did the supermarket runs, and was generally there at my beck and call whenever i needed him. i was one spoilt (but very hard working) lady.

but now, this can no longer be the case – unfortunately successful hospitality business’s do not cater for the beck and call of a spoilt wifey. at first, i tried cracking a pretty good princess tantrum for about, ohhh… 6 months. but it didn’t get me anywhere. i also had a good shot at being super-mum, trying to handle much more of the domestic duties, and working insane hours to compensate. but that just made me even more grumpy.

so after many discussion’s about how we can make this new situation work, raph put this to me: “you have worked your ass off for 15 years, and now this is your opportunity work less and just do the things you want to do”. at first, i was outraged. and silent. hard work is my thing – i love it, how could i stop doing what i do? but after a few weeks of consideration, i’m almost at peace with this idea. i’m even starting to like it.

i’ve relaised it doesn’t mean i will no longer be working hard, it does mean i can put more energy into the projects i really believe in, rather than saying yes to everything that comes my way because we need the money to pay our mortgage (yes, up until now i’ve still been working on things i didn’t love because basically we have needed the cash). what an insanely privileged situation i could potentially be in.

i’m so used to working the other way it actually feels a bit wrong, so to convince myself, here are some positive things that this new way of working will hopefully achieve in 2012 for me (resolutions of sorts i guess):

quality not quantity: as i said above – spending more time on the projects i’m really into, and creating for those projects the best work i can possibly deliver. this will also mean i might have to find “no” in my vocabulary from time to time. uh-oh.

more time with my kids: although i don’t do too badly in this department at the mo’, i really want hang with ari as much as i can before he starts school in 2013.

becoming a domestic goddess: our house up until now has generally been pure chaos, but shit under my house rule is going to be ORGANISED, and TIDY. i’m talking dinner menu’s planned 2 weeks in advance, grocery shopping being done online and delivered, a list of chores for each child to be completed every night and a pantry full of neat rows of labelled jars. and that’s just this week.

getting my license: yes, at the ripe old age of 38, i’m a loser who still does not drive. i’m actually quite happy not driving, but it does make getting 2 kids around sort of tricky. i have been taking intermittent lessons for 2 years now, and doing ok (except for parking. i suck at parking), but there is something in me that is just terrified of taking the test. i’m going to get hypnosis or anything else possible (suggestions?) to get over it and start driving for real. and i’m writing it on here for all your public eyes to read so it becomes a proper commitment out there in the world.

more things for me: more gardening, more bike-riding, more opp-shopping, more getting fit (with this life-changing lady), more time-wasting time on the internet, more reading books, more long lunches with wine, more trips to the library, more watching dvd’s, more sleeping. all the things i have struggled to find time to do before, i’m going to do more of now.

so there it is, my life laid bare for 2012. it all seems so positive and indulgent right now, but i guess everything could still go belly up and i’ll be back to slaving my nights away (which you know, i don’t actually mind every now and again). ah the joys of a husband and wife both being self-employed (and crazy).

what’s up for you guys in 2012?

merry merry!

christmas

my christmas shopping is finished (last parcel arrived this morning – magnificent timing australia post!), house is full of excited children, all i have to do is clean up the house for our house-sitter, wrap a few thousand presents, help raph prepare numerous dishes for next few days and i’ll be pretty much done (sounds easy, but i’m predicting my bedtime will still be post midnight). i will be down at the beach next week or two (while raph is at falls festival – boo!) , so posts maybe few and far between. but i’ll be back soon, most probably with obligatory summer holiday photos (plus i’m guess-blogging for the design files in jan too!).

hope you all have a super awesome christmas break,  filled with lots of chill time and good weather! thanks so much for reading my blog in 2011, can’t wait to show you what 2012 has in store!

giveaway – melancholia

December 20th, 2011

kirsten

if you happened to walk past our house 2 friday’s ago, chances are you heard wagner’s tristan and isolde blaring from my studio. and possibly saw me staring off into space, completely pre-occupied and unable to concentrate on anything for more than 10 minutes. this is because on the thursday night before, i was lucky enough to attend a preview for lars von trier’s melancholia. it affected me greatly and i haven’t been able to stop thinking about it since.

i don’t have words to describe how amazing this movie is. well, ok, a few – traumatic. exquisite. moving. mesmerising. painful. disastrous. brilliant. but above all, it’s pure visual beauty.

yes, i might have a slight crush on kirsten dunst, some deep-seeded curious obsessions/fantasies about the end of the world, and a tendency to be over enthusiastic about new things – all which probably contribute to melancholia pushing other movies aside, and taking number one of my favourite movies ever list. for real.

you can see it too, and decide for yourself, as thanks once again to madman, i have 5 double passes to give away. and as an EXTRA CHRISTMAS  SURPRISE BONUS, one winner will also receive a signed copy of my book and a bottle of cake wine (obviously, you must be over 18 to win!). just leave a comment before 5PM tomorrow (wednesday). winners will once again be picked at random.

** GIVEAWAY HAS NOW CLOSED ** thanks for all whom entered. winners will be notified tonight!

cake wines

December 15th, 2011

ok – i know i have been doing a lot of this co-lab business lately. first the art cooler, then sportsgirl, and now – wine!

i was asked by cake wines to design a label for them. it was one of those open brief deals – my favourite! as you can see, i did the white wine (sav blanc), and the ridiculously talented kill pixie designed the red wine (cab merlot). i was delivered some samples of my wine to taste too – and although i definitely no wine expert, i would confidently say it’s very drinkable.

this is the first wine release from cake wines, and 25 cents from each bottle sold goes towards supporting independent radio station FBI in sydney. can you read more about cake wines on their site, but in the meantime keep an eye out at your local bottle-o, and for events featuring cake wine and also at your local bottle-o (cute photo stolen from this article ).

hope you are not too sick of hearing about these co-labs as i have few more to tell you about soon.

friends for christmas

December 14th, 2011

i have some pretty clever friends making some pretty lovely things at the moment. things that could make perfect christmas presents in fact:

1. beneath the sun: the long-awaited goodies from my dearly missed previous assistant leah bartholomew. heavily influenced by her beachy surrounds, leah’s first range consists of cushions, stationary, art prints and lots of other things too – all adorned with leah’s beautiful illustrations. leah is doing the round of markets (her debut was at brisbane finders keepers) and has an online shop as well – check it out here (free shipping for xmas!). i have a long list of beneath the sun wants, at the top of it is: shapes cushions and colour my day notepad.

bts_2bts_1

2. poms by adriana giuffrida. in between being a freelance fashion designer, writer and working at the P.A.M store in sydney, adriana somehow finds time to create wonderful rings. all hand-crafted, these little beauties are just genius! i’m wishing for one in every colour (or at the very least the grey and pink ones). available from someday in melbourne, more stockists and info on the poms site.

pomsPoms_2

3. WITU - a project by 2 bright young things natalie turnbull (who you may sometimes find in my studio) and elise wilkens (who you may sometimes find taking photos of things for me). the first thing they are turning their hands to is super cute necklaces. they currently have a window display up at monkhouse design in brunswick east. more info and pics on their site. they also have a pretty cool tumblr to check out.

witu

also… a box of my book “compendium of me” arrived in the studio today. we are having a few hiccups with our online store, but they should be up there soon. in the meantime please email me (hello@beciorpin.com) if you would like to buy a copy. price is $20 plus postage – personal messages and/or signature added for no extra charge!

happy shopping!
