to help me through my last days of being a single parent (raph has now returned – hurrah! and with presents – double hurrah!), my mum booked myself and the kids a weekend in the yarra valley. we stayed at yering gorge

apart from being in a very lovely setting, it also has copius amounts of fairly tame kagaroo’s. ari was beyond himself with excitment (and actually, so was i).
on saturday we braved the freeeeezing temperatures and paid a visit to healesville sanctuary, where we saw the birds of prey show

i have now seen the show a few times and can higly recommend. this time i was lightly touched on the head by the wing of a barking owl as she swooped down to fetch some food – felt magic. we also managed to catch the koala’s at feeding time

its a rare thing to see a koala awake in the daytime and i was pretty star-struck! after we had had our fill of native fauna, we took the short drive to tarra warra

mum and i were hoping to taste some wine, although kids were not very excited by that suggestion, so after convincing them to have a quick view of the museum, me & ari raced tyke up the rolling hills

he won everytime. we then went to healesville and filled our shopping bags from the local organic farmers market and pasta from yarra valley pasta (my favourite!)
on sunday, we explored the walks around yering gorge

we did the pram-friendly circle walk which follows the yarra river

look how lovely it is before it hits the city pollution and turns brown! if it weren’t for the 5 degree temperatures i would have dived right in! also, thanks to recent rain, the ground was covered in all different moss and mushrooms

had been so long since i had been in the victorian bush. visually it was of course, refreshing and inspiring, but it was the smells and sounds and birdcalls that were sooooooooooo breathtaking and beautiful. gosh i love nature.
