i held my “paper folk” mobile making workshop at harvest over the weekend. even though it was a whole 2 days the time went by so fast!  i think i did an ok job teaching everyone, but it was my first time directing a workshop so i don’t have much to compare it too. regardless i had  lots of fun and was so impressed by the clever ladies who attended – it made me really inspired.

i am still knee-deep in coloured paper making things for my closing party/exhibition on sunday. my residency and pop-up shop has felt so indulgent and a pretty nice break from the real world. unfortunately the real world hasn’t actually gone anywhere and my other studio workload is piling up… next week is going to be full on. for now i’m going to relish these last few days of cut-paper fun. hope to see you sunday!

harvest_3harvest_1harvest_2harvest_5harvest_4

i have been having such a nice time down at harvest. it has been total radness being computer-free and playing around with paper all day long, and i have also been spoiled for company – not only that of the harvest ladies, but also dawn tan and emily green ,and mei, who has been doing work experience with me for the past 2 weeks. PLUS delicious home-made pies and cinnamonny hot chocolates from each peach next door. i’m already sad about the thought of leaving!

pop-up shop has been fun too – have had lots of nice visitors, some that i only know from blogland (hi emma!), and subsequently there has been a lot of chatting going on (i do love a chat). i didn’t consider chatting-time when thinking about how much work i could fit in during my residency, and have not been achieving as much as i wanted. SO, in quite a shambolic and unprofessional-type move (how unusual), i am changing the date of my work-in-progress viewing (originally planned and advertised for wednesday 29th – 6pm-9pm) to a closing party on sunday 3rd july, from 1pm – 4pm. this will relieve my stress levels a whole lot, and, actually makes more sense too.

do come and visit – (but not this weekend – we are closed because of my workshop. but open all next week and weekend!) – i am adding new things to the shop everyday (today some bits and pieces of tiny mammoth), and everything is at nice prices as well.

strange/overwhelming/amazing

Saturday, June 18th, 2011

well, it’s been a rather eventful 2 and half weeks. equal parts strange and amazing. i feel like have barely had time to breathe, let alone sit down and write a blog post. but now i do, so strap yourself in for one extra wordy post (or go to your next bookmarked blog now – i promise i wont be offended).

first of all, last saturday, i gave a talk organised by tess maccabe at the creative womens circle (tess’s work is so great, btw). i met loads of nice ladies and felt like it went well, and came home feeling you know, pretty great really. but, a few hours later, we had a very bizarre incident where i found a homeless guy wondering around our house smoking a cigarette. when i asked him what he was doing here he said he was from another planet and had built this house and needed to stay here. “ok” i said, alarm bells going off in my head  ”but you can’t smoke in my house”, and escorted him outside and tried to help him.

he was desperately confused and could barely put a sentence together (although he did know a lot about living on another planet), and after trying to help him for 10 mins and him continuously trying to get back into my house, i ended up having to call the police. although slightly scary, above all it was strange and sad, and all i can think is how could you possibly exsist being in a state like that, day in, day out? i’m sure he had meds somewhere, but how could he even remember when to take them, where they were? where is the help for these people?

another event, which has been a little overwhelming to say the least – my search for an assistant. since my last blog post i received over 90 enquiries for job descriptions and over 40 applications! WOWZERS! i honestly had no idea their were so many talented folk out there who would consider working for me?! applications have now well and truely closed – thanks to all who have applied. it has turned out to be a full-time job just sorting through all the folios, and if you have not heard from me, you will soon.

some other good things that have been happening:

zed

i became an auntie! raph’s bro rudin and his lovely lady brooke gave birth to baby zedrin last week. in true rashid form, he is a total champ, and we are all besotted – especially tyke and ari, who are so excited they finally have a first real blood cousin. everytime we visit tyke can’t keep his hands off him – its very sweet indeed. i am planning on kissing and squishing and spoiling him to bits everytime i see him (as every good auntie should).

ladybugs

we found a ladybird nest in our backyard – there is not much better than finding a few dozen ladybirds crawling around your backyard on a sunny winters day. for me anyway. nature is the best.

NAB

i finished a great job for NAB: it’s a book given to kids when they open a bank account, about how to save money. the above is a small sample (more soon – we are updating our site). it was one of those unbelievable jobs where everytime i submitted work the feedback was  ”perfect” (thanks JW for hooking it all up – you guys rule!). it’s also the closest i have got to achieving my most long-standing dream of illustrating a children’s book. hopefully there will be more of that in the future.

harvest_pop_up

pop-up shop and open studio at harvest workroom: starts on wednesday (22nd), and will co-incide with my mobile workshop next weekend. the pop-up shop will have all things from my beci orpin line and also some prints and will be open every day 12-4 (except for the weekend when the workshop is). i will also be in residence at the harvest workroom for 10 days (or there-abouts), creating new work based around folk tales with paper and screen-printing. its the first time in ages i will be making every thing by hand – i’m not even bringing my design security blanket (the computer)! scarey! i will be having a little work-in-progress opening the following wednesday (29th), (but only if the work turns out good) more details next few days (or email me for info before then).

that’s about it for now. thanks for reading the wordiness. enjoy your weekend!

looking for a design-assistant

Friday, June 3rd, 2011

in the past, you may have heard me talk about leah, my very lovely, trusty and talented assistant. well, at the end of last year, leah decided she could not face another melbourne winter, and was fed-up being so far away from good surf. so she packed up her things and returned to her sunny northern NSW home.

in the 5 years she worked here, leah became not only an imperative part of my business, but also one of my best friends, and part of my family. i miss her warmth, laughs and hilarious antics every day.

leah has set up her own freelance company (website coming soon), and continues to work with me on a project basis. but i am finding i still need some day-to-day design help in the studio. so – i am looking for new assistant, to work approx. 5 days a fortnight.

a word of warning – our studio is not your average work place and does tend to be a little mental. if you can’t handle cats/children/a bit of mess and things such as ari’s post-market art installations (below), please don’t apply. on the upside, if you are looking for a fun environment, with lots of things going on and interesting projects to help with, where you might occasionally get lunch cooked for you too – do check it out!

if you have design skills and are interested, or know someone who might be, please email me on hello@beciorpin.com for the job description. applications close tuesday the 14th of june.

tio_1tio_2tio_3tio1A

having levi come and stay proved way too much for me and and on friday night this little guy arrived. his name is tio (short for tomatillo). he is proving to be a great help in the studio – his special skills include adding extra letters to my emails, chasing the cursor on my screen and tipping over paint water.

tyke and ari are completely besotted by him and spend much of their time making him expansive cushion house’s. miso is not so besotted by him, and is doing a lot of hissing and giving us a lot of WTF? looks. i am hoping will be just be a matter of time.

welcome to the madness tio! i think you will fit in perfectly.
