* puppy-sat:

levi

his name is levi and he is a 14 week old italian greyhound. he was a barrel of fun (look – he is smiling for the camera in this shot). the kids were mental for him and even loved his sharp little bites. it’s stirred up my buying-a-new-kitten impulses. i may have even done something about it too. more on that later.

* discovered a new cookbook:

flavour_thesaurus

it was the awesome cover art that coerced my purchase of this from my local bookstore brunswick bound (so obsessed with pie-charts right now). as it turns out the flavour thesaurus is not only an inspiring resource, but also full of the most amusing and clever cookbook writing. author niki segnit is pure genius.

*prepared for markit:

markit_1markit_3markit_2

we are having our third ever market stall at markit at fed square this sunday. we have been making some new products for it too – printed tote bags, painted brooches and some baby quilts made from ‘vintage’ princess tina fabrics (some sneak peeks above – they have come up a treat!). as per usual everything is in limited numbers so we may or may not have them on our webstore afterwards. we will also be selling our existing stock (mobiles, cushion etc) all at special markit prices. plus, there are lots of other great stall holders there too including douglas and hope, michi girl and iggy and lou-lou. more details on the markit website.

and if you needed even more reason to go – due to the NGV 150th anniversary both the taco truck and beatbox kitchen will be at fed square. they actully start tomorrow and will be there all weekend – serving from early til late in the night.

* went to 2 exhibitions:

bleem

holey hole by misha hollenbach at utopian slumps and bleemweaver by brianna martin at mr kitly. both are completly different – misha with his amazing gigantic photocopy collages, organic ceramics and slices of neon, and brianna with her beautiful hand-woven scarfs and bags (colours so fantastic!) – but both equally great and worth checking out.

holey hole at utopian slumps, ground floor, 33 guilford lane, melbourne. until 18th june

bleem weaver at mr. kitly, 1st floor, 381 sydney road, brunswick. until 8th june

* stayed at the lark house in daylesford:

lark_house_1lark_house_2lark_house_3lark_house_4

technically this was actually last weekend, but i still had to write about it because it was so damn nice. allison from lark has done a stand-out job of setting up a guest house that is cosy, beautifully decorated (gorgeous wallpaper! vintage posters! patchwork quilts!) and kid-friendly. plus it sleeps a lot of peeps and is walking distance to all the good things daylesford township has to offer. i dragged my mum along with us for her outstanding company (and willingness to stop at country opp-shops). it was great to get out of the city and enjoy some country air and the prettiness of daylesford in autumn. you can see lots of pics of the house here, and if you would like to stay in it you can book here.

apart from the above good things, my past 2 weeks have actually been pretty crap. i dont think my planets are aligned at the moment. but things are looking up, and i have many more good things to post about in the near future. til then, enjoy your weekend, might see you at markit!

dilemma’s

Sunday, May 15th, 2011

this past few weeks, i have been faced with a few dilemma’s. there are the usual ones – what the hell did i wear last winter to stay warm? is it weird that ari asks for “seven pieces of apple” as a topping for nachos? is it even weirder that he then looks down his pants and tells me his penis is “just like a brachiosaurus”? how do i stop miso drinking out of the fish bowl? you know, every day stuff.

this dilemma is not one of those.

since changing raph’s office into a lounge room (which is so awesome, btw), raph has moved into the studio with me. personality-wise, this works out just fine – raph and i have always worked together, even before we were in a relationship – we do it well. however cleanliness-wise, it does not. i am self-admittedly not the cleanest person in the world – i have a lot of crap, and it can get out of control, but every few weeks i sort it out, have a big clean up and re-set. which is were raph and i differ. his crap (mostly paper work and a few thousand free tee-shirts,) just builds up, and builds up and builds up. no eventual clean up. this is driving me a little mental.

this current studio sharing arrangement is just temporary – raph is looking for a warehouse, but it’s proving harder than we thought to find one which is affordable, big enough to fit the trucks, close to our house and not a dark, squalid cave. but i am sure its coming, and aforementioned dilemma will be solved. but, then, a new one will arise for me – should i move my studio into his warehouse? i would have my own separate space, so mess would not be a problem.

there are things i do like about having my studio at home. i like that during the day i can take 10 mins out to put on dinner/do laundry/have left-overs for lunch. i like that tyke can come home after school and be at here while a work (doesn’t work so well with ari yet). and i have a big space with lots of light and lofty ceilings and a view of the park. it’s pretty great set-up. it’s also convenient with my night-time working schedule.

but, there are also things i do not like: that being the first room in the house, it’s the family dumping ground (school bags, skateboards, last weeks lunch). that i often feel like i have not left the house in weeks. and that if a client comes over for a meeting i have to make sure the whole house is clean incase he/she needs to go to the toilet at the other end of the house. and  there is also the whole worklife/homelife separation issue (of complete lack there-of).

what do you think about this whole work from home business? blessing, or curse?

i have been thinking about it a lot. and have decided, my ultimate working set-up is still at home, but separated from the actual house. some kind of amazing hand-crafted wood and glass constuction at the back of the garden, surrounded by greenery, which could even have it’s own quaint laneway entrance. i am hoping i can make this a reality, and incorporate it into our renovation (which fingers crossed will actually come to fruition one day). in the meantime, i can deal with current set-up, especially if it is sans-raph-mess.

here are some images feeding my garden-enclosed separate home studio dream:

also – please excuse the exceptionally wordy post. some of my favourite blogs have very little writing, sometimes i wish i could be one of those. but my workload has been so crazy of late that i am a little starved of non-family or work-related conversation – thus it gets spewed forth into cyber space. just pray you don’t bump into me in the supermarket as i am likely to force a 30 minute conversation out of anyone who gives me a sideways glance.

enjoy your week!

smmobilessmbearsmcolouredteethsmmoonheart

we have made a new batch of mobiles and they are now available in our webshop. we even had some fancy photos taken of them by nat from arthurs circus. she did a such a nice job – thanks nat!

i am also hosting a mobile making workshop with the lovely ladies at harvest textiles on the 25th and 26th of june. more info and bookings here. i am lucky enough to be having a solo show at the harvest textiles workshop which will open on june 17th. more details on that soon too. it will (of course) feature mobiles, and some other things too.

i am still recovering from the talks, exhibitions and a week of manic deadlines. today is the first day in weeks i haven’t felt stressed, and the first weekend for a long time with no commitments. i am lazily lapping it up – reading my book, making soup, and possibly following it up with some (window) vintage furniture shopping.

hope you are enjoying your weekend too.
