christmas spirit = found

Friday, December 24th, 2010

so, as you know, i was searching for some extra christmas spirit, and this morning it arrived in the form of an email.

Rasa Juskeviciute, photographer and teacher at  Justinas Vienozinskis art school in Vilnius, Lithuania has a sister who lives in sydney, and who sends Rasa packages which include frankie magazine. the school has never had a history of having a christmas tree, which she found rather silly, so this year they made there first ever, inspired by my tree that appeared in frankie (have a look here).  instead of filling it with paper cuts, they filled it with the kids drawings, paintings and ceramics.

that light bulb is one of the best things i have ever seen. in fact the whole tree is A-M-A-Z-I-N-G.

thanks for sending rasa. i am speechless. and a little teary. and also full to the brim of christmas spirit.

christmas list

Thursday, December 23rd, 2010

i’m not really digging on christmas this year. usually i manage to muster up a bit of christmas spirit and excitement, but to be honest, i would be happy if we could just give it a miss this time around.

not only is there the usual madness one encounters this time of year (last minute deadlines, christmas party hang-overs, remembering to buy presents for everyone), but raph is also taking the beatbox to falls festival. working out how he is going to potentially feed 16,000 people over 5 days during a period where lots of his suppliers are closed is a logistical and complicated nightmare. and to top it off he also has to be set up by boxing day, so it’s thrown our usual lovely-beach-dinner-with-friends plans (that i really really look forward to) astray. sigh. the things we do.

but, as we have children, there is no chance in hell we can skip christmas. and for their sake alone i don’t want to either. so last week i made some chirstmas effort – we brought a christmas tree and decorated it, and have had an advent calander to count down the days. and tomorrow i am hoping to shake the “bah humbug” out of me by baking gingerbread and making some other christmasy type things too.

i thought of another way to lift my christmas spirits – make yet another dream present list:

shine shine cushions:

cushions

all the way from cape town and featuring prints by the amazing heidi chisholm. my lounge room is crying out for some of this bold crazy african style. if i was brave enough i would cover a whole couch in one of the textiles too. available in australia through tractor home and one of my fav melbourne stores – after (99 thierry st, melbourne, which is now bigger and better!)

* taxidermy budgie from cottage industry:

budgie

i am quite partial to a spot of taxidermy. i once had a taxidermy duckling but it was eaten by my dad’s standard poodle. these budgies are great colours and not too expensive either (you read more about them on penelope’s blog). i’ll have 3 thanks.

karen walker sunglasses:

sunglasses_1sunglasses_2

i’m not big on sunglassses. when i wear them it makes me feel like i am in 2 dimensions. but i really should (trying to be more sun-smart and all). so after a long search these are the only ones it want. and of course they are limited edition and only available in NZ. so typical.

* anything from angelucci 20th century:

cane_chairs

i have been a fan of angelucci for years – dean sold me my first featherston and eames chairs way back before i knew children could destroy them. he still has eames and featherston but also lots more beautiful things – rorstrand ceramics, danish table linen and the best cane chairs i have ever seen.

frankie spaces book:

spaces

i am sure you have seen this featured in lots of places, but that’s because its really really good. if i don’t receive it as a present, i will be buying it first thing boxing day

ALL knitwear.

all_top

i have been admiring annie larson’s hand knitted goods for a few months, and contimplating which one to order, when low and behold there they were right on gertrude st in cute new store (and french school!!) dagmar rousset. this knitwear is the best thing i have seen in AGES. i chose this top becuase its cute and summery but there are about a thousand other pieces that are equally (if not more) as awesome. check out annie’s flickr and prepare to be gob-smacked with the best colour combo’s you have possibly ever seen.

mary and matt chocolate:

mm_1mm_2

hands down best designed chocolate ever. one of my favourite blogs too. available from third drawer down

* a gigantic cacti

cacti

in particular one from collectors corner, the best plant store in melbourne. they also sell dinosaur fossils and crystal. really, this place deserves a blog post all to itself. maybe it could be an upcoming holiday special.

that’s enough self indulgence for now, although i think i may have succeeded in making me feel a little more festive. or do i just want to go shopping?

hope you are surviving the pre-christmas madness out there…. bring on 2011 i say! xx

bright!

well, its been an interesting time in the studio. my computer just couldn’t cope with the flurry and excitement of my website launching (thanks for all nice comments!) and up and died on tuesday night. yes, i did have pretty much everything backed up on a separate hard drive, but it has still made my life tricky, and also made me strangely emotional. i have had that computer for 7 years and it has served me well.

i knew it was on the way out but it still took me by surprise – especially financially. so while raph and i (who’s computer is also on the brink of death) slowly gather the money to buy 2 new computers, i have been working on leah’s computer and leah has been working from home. although it’s not been that bad, it still feels make-shift and i haven’t been able to settle down actually achieve much at all.

to add to the dysfunctional pain, my phone refused to text or dial anything with the 6 and 9 buttons, and my much-loved coat rack simply fell of the wall. i couldn’t help but feel everything was giving up on me.

feeling pretty sorry for myself, i tried to have a whinge to raph, who promptly snapped me out of it with one of his it’s-just-life/let’s-make-a-plan type talks, and now its all ok. really, he can work wonders. we get new computers on tuesday (YES!), and i checked my phone plan and its up TOMORROW!! (i have resisted for a while, but iphone here i come!)

when i have been managing to get some work done, there have been some pretty great things to put my efforts into – some new projects with GAS (including a cute one for my favourite japanese department store),  poster artwork for an upcoming (very exciting) tour, graphics for another one of raph’s ventures (very soon) and making plans for next year (big changes!). also, our mobiles have been snapped up by lovely stores around the globe (including this one) and are also part of the design files xmas giveaway.

plus i have been distracting myself with lots bright things :

bright_1bright_2bright_3bright_4bright_6bright_7

*composition i photographed as one of my new site backgrounds. i was so happy with it it hung around for few days

* baby beets from my garden and pretty ranunculus

* presents for awesome ladies from a very awesome lady – so 1989! so wild!

* ari making a card for leah (happy birthday leah!)

* another present from another awesome lady (this book is properly mind-blowingly good. pip, you are a legend). NB – fluro yellow nailpolish, thanks lovely bonnie)

* a private commission piece i just finished and is currently in transit to the framers.

PLUS another bit of brightness – my very very very amazing mum has started a blog. tune in for lots of musing on family and life and food and drink (and maybe some more drink). it’s just occured to me that between here, my mum’s blog and my sister’s blog you could pretty much know our entire life stories. how werid. and a little scary. (thank-god my dad doesn’t like computers).

anyway, that’s it for now. i tried really hard not to make this another whingey post. i hope that it wasn’t. you are nice for reading it even if it was. x
