werk/eley kishimoto

Thursday, September 23rd, 2010

being a textile designer by trade, eley kishimoto have long been one of my favourite labels, so i was pretty excited to come across magazine werk issue no.17 at poepke on my recent trip to sydney.

its not cheap ($150) but is limited edition of 1000, and each one is hand-assembled with different EK fabric swatches on the outside. inside the magazine (more of a thick book really) it not only has most of their textile prints, but also shows their process really well – from inspiration to sketches to screen artwork to finished product, right up to their current collection. there is even cute baby pics of them both. too much goodness!

raph and i spent the past few days in sydney. despite having to negotiate sydney’s maze of one-way streets and make it to a bunch of meetings on time (did feel a little like we were on race around the world at times), it was the longest child-free time we have spent together in a while, and was so nice.

in between the meetings we enjoyed catch-ups with friends (these guys and these guys too), stayed at a very nice hotel, and attended the opening of new argentinean restaurant porteno (from the owners of bodega – so yum!). plus not to mention relishing the beautiful sydney weather – sunshine and 22 degrees!

i also got to check out my fav sydney stores –  incu womens’ store (why do we not have one in melbourne? ), poepke, and the new sydney outre gallerywhile on crown st i visited chee soon and fitzgerald. the store owners had just brought down two huge baskets of old marimekko swatches from their office and very kindly let me rummage through them for an hour or so. was heaven – i couldnt help but purchase more than a few.

although it was action-packed there were still a million things i didn’t get to do and some of my favourite people that i didn’t get to see – doesn’t matter how organised you are 2.5 days just isn’t long enough. keep those skies blue for my next visit sydney – am hoping will be soon.

sozi

sozi: a new project from one of my favourite illustrators rilla alexander. sozi even has her own blog, and shop (cant wait for my very own sozi doll!)

radish

radishes: thanks to my step-father’s influence we used to snack on them all the time as kids. in the past few years they haven’t made it onto my shopping list – i had forgotten how delicious they are. particularly in the above salad from the wednesday chef. recipe here

dots

watercolour and paper dots (still!)

dogs-resize

come over sunday: my new favourite house blog, in particular the post on an 84 yr olds house in mackay - so beautiful! speaking of beautiful houses, this is my new dream house.

blossoms

blossom-spotting: although its been pretty easy of late – they seem to be blooming everywhere. in between the torrential rain and  gale-force winds we have actually had some blue skies, and even some 18 degree days. i read that spring “comes in like a lion and leaves like lamb”- so looking forward to some warm days and for the BBQ-ing season to commence!

studio update coming soon xx

beci x gorman and new lamington drive opening

Thursday, September 2nd, 2010

things have finally settled down in our world. the family is healthy (well raph has a touch of man flu – but that doesn’t count), and i am busy and working late into the night and happy once again. even ari woke up in a good mood today.

some exciting news – the first of my collaboration tees with gorman is now in store. the print is featured on gorman’s lovely soft organic cotton tee-shirts, and $5.00 of the sale price is being donated to friends of the earth. there will be another 5 prints coming out over the next few months.

some more exciting news – the new lamington drive gallery opens tonight! the compound interest has moved from their cozy fitzroy quarters to an epic space in collingwood. the new space will feature not only lamington drive, but also jacky winter HQ, a retail shop (selling among other things, our products), a print and framing workshop, a motorbike restoration company, an architecture gallery and a 150 person cinema! i also heard whisper of a new cafe/deli opening there in near future too. could this be the curtin house of collingwood?

the opening exhibition is from the very talented eamo donnelly and is titled “health food of a nation”. it apparently includes an awesome installation of vintage australian junk food ephemera.

exhibition opening and new-building-warming is  tonight from 6pm-9pm, 19-25 keele st, collingwood. oh and the beatbox will be there serving burgers and other deliciousness too! what a night! cant wait!
