a week at butterland

June 2nd, 2013

a few weeks ago i spent one blissful week at butterland – a property owned by greg hatton and katie marx just outside of newstead, victoria.  it is an utterly beautiful place – not showed any justice at all by my crappy iphone pics. i was accompanied by my book dream team – michelle mackintosh, chris middleton, alice oehr and amelia leuzzi (as well as a bunch of other fantastic helpers arriving daily), with the sole intention of shooting a bunch of images for my new book.  the weather was exceptionally kind to us, and we managed to score the last week of beautiful autumn sunshine (although GODDAMN the nights were cold).

butterland_5butterland_13butterland_6butterland_10butterland_12buttlerland_7butterland_8butterland_4butterland_14butterland_11

from alice’s amazing lunch-time spreads, to hanging out with newborn lambs, and not to mention the incredible work we achieved – the whole week was a completely magical experience. fingers crossed it shows through in the new book (which will be out november 1!).

ps amelia took pics 2 and 8 and they are much nicer than mine – you might even spot me in there somewhere.

true self / PAM sale / DIY sneaks

May 30th, 2013

YES it’s been a while. it’s the usual excuse ( BOOK MAYHEM ) which will continue to rule my life for a few weeks yet, but for now there are a few things happening in melbourne which i wanted to write about:

TRUE SELF at MGPO:

i was involved in this exhibition last year (this is was one of my joint pieces), but this year is a little different. once again organised by jacky winter (who have an amazing new site BTW), ‘true self ’sees photographers team up with different artist and illustrators to make a large scale piece with the theme of ‘positive self image’. i was lucky enough to be paired up with the awesome sean fennessy. working with sean was such a breeze it felt almost criminal! here is the result of our pairing:

TrueSelf_BeciOrpin_SeanFennessy_LR

there are a limited number of participants involved in this show, but it is of course a stand out cast including: misha hollenbach / warwick baker, tai snaith / jo duck and dylan martorell / clare are. there will be prints of various sizes and prices available for sale, and once again all the proceeds go towards charity fitted for work. the exhibition is on the top level of the GPO, and runs may 31st to june 23. more info here.

SOMEDAY SALE:

this is an event that comes around once (or maybe twice) a year and is known to cause mach anticipation and salivation amongst those with good taste. this sale will feature clothing from PAM, bernhard wilhelm, supreme, undercover and all the other labels stocked at someday. all of the items will be at very nice prices so be EARLY. details below (although has been extended until june 10 now!)

GORMAN CHOOSE YOUR OWN ADVENTURE SNEAKERS:

a few weeks ago i was asked by gorman to customise a pair of their new sneakers (along with 20 other creative peeps). having just returned from the week-long book photoshoot (more on that later) i thought i might be drained of all my DIY-abilities. but i managed to squeeze a bit more out, and onto these sneakers. you can see all the participant sneakers here, and also bid on them too (check out sibling’s and ashley goldberg’s – AMAZE). all the money from the sales go towards little seeds big trees.

A Hidden Place with Kat Macleod

April 18th, 2013

hidden_placeHidden_place_1hidden_place_3hidden_place_4hidden_place_2hiddeb_place_5hidden_place_7hidden_place_6hidden_lace_8

as you may know – for the past few months, i have been working on a collaborative exhibition with fellow illustrator kat macleod. (some WIP shots above, last one by ameila)

i was nervous about this collaboration at first – yes, i have worked on colabs before, but usually with companies in a commercial context. working with one of your peers in a purely creative context is quite a different experience. lucky for me it was a completely amazing one.

Kat is nothing short of a mega-star. so talented. so lovely. so organised (did you know she is part owner of ortolan?!). and on top of that a mum to 2yr old jimmy, and on her way to having twins!

the process of deciding how to go about the colab was an interesting one – kat and i started by sending pictures of things that were inspiring us to each other, from that we decided on a theme. then we drew up 2 lists of words, relating to the theme and also things we both liked to draw, and then divided the words in 2 jars and picked them out randomly. these random picks became the titles of each piece of work.

what have we made? 10 collaborative pieces – 5 pieces which kat started and passed on to me to finish, and 5 the reverse. we have also produced 8 solo pieces each, and 4 collaborative editioned prints. all the original work is the same is (76cm x 56cm), and for me, it is the largest scale and most amount of original artwork i have ever made for a show! we also put together an installation in the middle of the gallery, of  hand-dyed and spray painted streamers and garlands. after installing it for the last few days (with some help from alice oehr and amelia leuzzi - thanks ladies) it has turned out to be one of my favourite parts of the show.

i am so happy with this show – i cant tell you how much. even though kat and my styles are so different, the works have turned out beautifully, and feel very special too.

the exhibition opens tonight, from 6pm-9pm and then runs for 5 weeks:

‘A Hidden Place’, by Beci Orpin and Kat Macleod. April 19 – May 25. Lamington Drive, 15-25 Keele St, Collingwood. ph: 03 8060 9745

i will post some more detailed pics of the works a bit later, but if you are in melbourne please come to the opening tonight and see for yourself! in the meantime you can see some here, here and here.

giveaway – kester black nail polish

April 13th, 2013

i have said it before – i’m just not a make-up type girl. i do often hurriedly put on a bit of eyeliner and mascara as i’m rushing out the door, but that’s usually it. in some ways i wish i was more skilled in beauty department, but it usually comes down to time, and lack of confidence.

one cosmetic i do find time for – nail polish. i guess it goes hand in hand with my colour obsession (no pun intended), plus i don’t have to look in the mirror to do put it on (and i’m not so bad with a brush either).

i have a little collection of nail polish that sits of my desk, and when a procrastination moment grabs me – i have a mini-nail-polish-party. of late, most of those nail polishes are of the kester black variety. i was completely obsessed by the celestial collection this past summer (nebula – what a dream!), so it was extra great when i discovered kester black’s clever creator Anna Ross lived in my hood. in fact a mere hundred metres away from my house!

Anna has very kindly given me the whole new “winter garden” range of kester black nail polishes to giveaway to one lucky person (10 different nail polishes in total)! here is a sample of some of the lovely new colours – you can see the full range here. from the top: french lavender, periwinkle, silver birch and snap dragon (french lavender plus nebula is my current favourite combo):

French-Lavendar-FLOWER-15cmPeriwinkle-FLOWER-15cmSilver-Birch-FLOWER-15cmSnapdragon-FLOWER-15cm

some other awesome things about kester black: all nail polishes are locally made and not tested on animals, plus kester black provides nail polishes for trophy wife nail art (check out the cute nail art book they made!). AND they also have a super nice accessories range too.

to be in the running please leave a comment below before 9pm sunday EST. GOOD LUCK!

** THIS GIVEAWAY IS NOW CLOSED** thanks to all who entered!

new finds: ladies edition

April 5th, 2013

i’ve been thinking about this post for a little while – a few months even – wanting to share some of the things i have been discovering lately. but it took a different turn recently when i gave a talk at creative mornings. once i had finished there was question time, and someone asked me who were my biggest influences. every one i could think of on the spot was a male. this felt a little hypocritical, particularly after talking about the subconscious struggle i had had in a male-dominated industry.

i did have, and still do have, a lot of female influences, but at that moment my mind went blank (which is not a rare occurence to be honest). so i thought i would dedicate this “new finds” to the laides.  here are my top favourite new finds – the ladies version:

1. collier campbell. these two english sisters have been working since the 1960’s, and for the likes of liberty and yves saint laurent, but it wasn’t until i came across their recent book “the collier campbell archive” that i realised i had coveted many of their design for a long time. the book has become my new textile design bible. seeing their work all together in this amazing volume makes me want to throw away my computer and keep a strict gouche-only regime.

(all pictures from the book except the first one which is from here)

2. belle kogan: i discovered belle kogan’s work during an extensive etsy browsing session one day. she was an industrial designer from the late 1920’s and onwards, although like all good designers her work remains current and beautiful. i promptly brought 2 pieces (this is one of them). once they arrived i fell even more in love with them – i can definitely feel another collection coming on.

3. olimpia zagnoli: she is young and brilliant and cute and lives in milan and illustrates for long list of enviable clients. i discovered her work on instagram, and then i saw her extra sweet apartment (which she shares with her matching boyfriend) on freunde von freunden, accompanied by an equally as great interview (aside from giving me major pre-child-life envy). in this interview she also has very nice things to say.

4. kindah khalidy: textile designer and artists based in california – kindah’s work is close to my heart. especially as she makes products which are reasonably priced and useful, with hand-created patterns. ticks all my boxes. check out her lovely shop here.

5. sonia rentsch: sonia’s name keeps popping up all over the place for me lately. she is a lady that is hard to categorise: part stylist, part  3-d illustrator, part set-designer – her skills seem endless. whatever she does turns her hand to, she always puts together beautiful work. see more of her projects on her site:

SR1sr-3SR-2

(last image from current issue of inside out)

some other great local ladies: stampel, emily green, full drop co, harvest, super wild horses (new album ‘crosswords” = amazing) and of course my lovely friend kirra jamison (who’s new show “still point” at sophie gannon is SO GOOD).

one more lady mention: my favourite blog – i’m revolting. su’s taste is original and impeccable and always inspiring. she is the best pinner too.

AND AN ANNOUCMENT: it’s official –  i am working on book number 2! thanks to your support ‘Find and Keep’ has gone really well (just about to go into second print!), so i am working on a follow-up of sorts, again with hardie grant, which will be released later this year. exciting. and terrifying. and stressful. and also preventing me from blogging. and many other things too. but you know – you can find me on instagram. think of that as my more updated blog, but with far less words (i.e a much better version).

exhibition details coming up next….

summer_nidosummer_katsummer_sunrisesummer_swimsummer_appsummer_kids_creatingsummer_studiosummer_bbksummer_mobiles_1summer_mobiles_2

- put together some easter DIY projects for german NIDO magazine. the bunny was our favourite and least-well-behaved prop.

- started working on a very fun and special collaborative project with kat mcleod. more details next week.

- sweltered through 2 record-breaking heatwaves. at one point i was so fed-up with my constant sweaty state i checked our family into a hotel for the night. it felt ridicoulsy excessive but our evening of swimming and a night of air-conditioned comfort (and my prevailing return to sanity) was worth every cent.

- discovered this super great new app.

- tried to keep up with ari’s creating frenzy. he is an art-making whirlwind at the moment.

- re-organised my studio (several times) in an effort to get the year started properly (it didn’t work).

- ventured on my annual pilgrimage to golden plains. it was SO HOT but i still had so much fun. i love you toro y moi and moody man.

- designed and put together 3 new mobiles for isetan in tokyo (and new chocolate boxes too). once again, all organised by the lovely folk at GAS.

one thing i haven’t been doing – you may have noticed – is blogging. not intentionally. other things have just been getting in the way – a ton of work, kid’s school schedules, piles of washing and a whole lot of ‘Girls‘(AKA best series ever written. ever). i’m not going to beat myself up over it. that’s just not the point of this here thing. and i do have a few things close to completion in my drafts folder. one or 2 might even make it to published folder pretty soon.

hope your enjoying the last of your summer (or winter) days…

Torafu architects at Mr.Kitly

February 8th, 2013

you know when you happen upon a collection of work, and it ends up being a whole lot of great things which you love, and were all actually made by the same person? well that is happened to me when i received a newsletter from mr. kitly announcing an upcoming exhibition with torafu architects.

once i clicked through to the torafu site i was all  ”NO WAY – they made that as well?  i love that!”. after an even closer inspection of their incredibly broad range of work (houses, shop fit outs, furniture, kids toys, book ends), they definitely fall into my “favourite designers of all time “category. here is just a small selection of why:

tarofu_1torafu_4torafu_6torafu_3torafu_5torafu_2

and now torafu will be here, in melbourne!  right in my hood in fact. they will be showcasing some of their furniture and children’s toys in australia for the first time, and putting together a no doubt beautiful air vase installtion in the mr. kitly gallery.  plus the director of torafu architects Koichi Suzano, will be present himself on the opening night (tomorrow!), and will be giving a talk. i will be there too, listening intently, undoubtly staring gooey-eyed and getting red cheeks at the prospect of meeting mr. suzano himself.

TORAFU ARCHITECTS EXHBITION at Mr. Kitly –  upstairs, 381 sydney rd, brunswick. opening night february 8th, 6pm-8pm, with talk from mr.Suzano from 6.30-7. exhibition continues until february 24th.

more details on the Mr.Kitly website.

it also must be said: HOW CRAZY WAS THE RESPONSE TO THAT GIVEAWAY?! it was pure madness in my inbox. i had NO idea it was going to go down like that! (a little push from lovely lucy definitely helped). thank-you to all who entered. the winners have now been chosen and notified. i’m very sorry if it wasn’t you. i promise i will have some more good giveaways in the coming months.

beci orpin for urban outfitters + giveaway

January 23rd, 2013

yes that would be me for urban outfitters. how E X C I T I N G. what a dream project.

one of the frustrating things of running a small-time business (and yes, it is very small time – sometimes i get email’s addressed to “the beci orpin team”. that team would be me, 2 part-time trusty helpers that i call in when i need/can afford them, and those other lovely ones who help out for free) is having loads of ideas for products and not the finance nor the time nor the people-power to make it happen. you can see evidence of this in the current very lack lustre state of my webstore.

but designing products is one of my favourite things to do. so when urban outfitters approached me to do a co-lab and design some items for their apartment section of course i said a big YES PLEASE. and it only got better from there. i sent a bunch of ideas thinking that the collection would get cut down to a few pieces, but to my dis-belief they just kept saying “lets do it” to most of what i sent through – with no changes at all to the designs! totes amaze.

and  here are the results:

UO_patchworkUO_groupUO_dreamcatcherUO_geo_duvetUO_wallhangingUO_stripe_rugUO_bearUO_triangle_cushionUO_geostripe_duvet

lots of fun things hey? and of course they are all for sale on the urban outfitters site (and some on the UO UK site too). australians note: UO offers ridcously cheap shipping to aus – free for purchases over $50 even. (also note – there has been some trouble getting rugs shipped – although some peeps have succeeded. if you have trouble but are keen try a shipping service like this one or if you have buddies in the US get it sent to them and then on to you). i also did a little interview on the UO Blog over here.

and now it’s time for A GIVEAWAY. thanks to the generousity of urban outfitters i have a set of my colab products to giveaway. this is how it’s gonna roll: there will be three prize packs -

PRIZE PACK ONE contains: 1 x floating geo duvet cover and matching shams, 1 x stripe tribal rug, 1 x triangle cushion and 1 x dream-catcher

PRIZE PACK TWO contains: 1 x stripe geo duvet cover and matching shams, 1 x kilim rug, 1 x bear cushion

PRIZE PACK THREE contains: 1 x patchwork quilt and matching shams, 1 x geometric wall hanging

PLUS 3 runners up will receive a copy of my book “Find and Keep” (thanks to the champs at hardie grant)

to be in the running leave a comment below before 5pm monday 28th january (melbourne time). i will select all winners and match them with prize packs by random. winners will be notified early next week. good luck!

NB: there are some items which have currently sold out in the collection, but i have been informed UO have re-ordered and new stock will be arriving march/april.

- – -THIS GIVEAWAY IS NOW CLOSED! THANKS FOR THE OVERWHELMINGLY INCREDIBLE RESPONSE! winners will be announced shortly – - -

welcome 2013

January 10th, 2013

HAPPY_2013

around this time last year i wrote this post about what 2012 was going to be for me. so, let’s see how i went with my resolutions:

quality not quantity / more time with my kids / more things for me: WHAT A FAT LOAD OF CRAP. last year was easily my busiest and most insane year ever, mostly thanks to my book. then once my book was finished, raph was in the midst of building 2 new (quite expensive) trucks, and we realised that actually we were a bit poor and i had to do a bucket load of freelance to get us through. my ‘kid time’ remained the same, but i barely had time to sleep, let alone “time for me”. kids seemed to have survived relatively unscathed and happy though. and i will have time for me one day (maybe in my 70’s? or 80’s?).

get my license: EPIC FAIL. no i did not. not even close. in fact, i think my driving skills and confidence went backwards. i have a bunch of awesome and well-rehearsed excuses if you want to hear them. that’s the last time i think a public declaration will motivate me into something i am actually petrified to do.

becoming a domestic goddess: FAIL. our house is as chaotic and messy as it ever was. probably even worse.

how do i feel about all that? fine actually. yes 2012 was pure insanity, but it was also the most rewarding and exciting and amazing year to date. bring on more of that kind of insanity i say.

as for 2013 – do i dare make some more public resolutions? yes, i shall. i already know it’s going to be another insane year (on the list so far: 4 exhibitions – one solo; 2 more books), so i’m going to try and make them more reasonable:

1. waste less food - we cook everyday. we grocery shop almost everyday too (locally and organic whenever possible), but are guilty of throwing out quite a bit of food. we compost a lot of it, but it would be better if it was used instead of composted – wasted food is also a waste of water and resources, and that shit is not cool. it also feel outrageous throwing wilted carrots away when a lot of the world does not have enough to eat. so this year i’m going to enforce a bit of menu planning and making meals out of what we have in the garden, fridge and the pantry, instead of shopping all the time. we will see how it goes. (check out the foodwise site for more info on food waste in australian households. facts are quite scary. you can do your bit too!).

2. take better photos – you may have noticed – i have become quite lazy with my photos. i dont even get out my little auto camera any more – it’s pretty much all iphone snaps. i want to break this habit. although i definitely dont want to be a professional photographer, i do think after all these years i should be able to use proper camera, and know how to take proper photos. i’m also thinking of investing in a new camera – something in between a automatic and an SLR – recommendations welcome.

3. be less stressed – i’m all for being busy, but being busy and stressed is another story. i have been known to get myself into quite a state, and it can effect everyone around me. i’m on a mission to remind myself that if i don’t meet that deadline the world won’t end (and that i have pretty much never not met a deadline). and also it comes back to that “no” word – i’m going to try that out again. and maybe throw in a bit of meditation for good measure too.

4. getting out there – i am quite bad at making it to events: exhibitions, movies, lunch dates etc. i mean the intention is there, i’ve just been time poor. and unlike some other kids, cafes and exhibition openings are a form of torture for tyke and ari, so bringing them with me has not been an option either. i’m not making any outlandish claims that this year i will be magically plucking more time out of the air, but with ari at school i’m hoping i might have a bit more opportunity to see the things and the people i want too. quite possibly this time will also be occupied with a lot of work. like i said – no outlandish claims.

5. teach my kids to be more self-sufficient - sometimes i feel like my kids are heading into the over-privileged category. they get to go on overseas holidays, they get almost everything they ask for (within reason), they have exceptionally cool parents (ahem). of course – i want them to give them as much as i can, but i don’t want them to end up being spoilt brats who can’t fend for themselves. my mum was a working mum so from  high school age my sister and i were washing our own clothes, cooking dinner and packing our own school lunches. i vaguely remember feeling a bit annoyed by these tasks, but also empowered, and it taught me a lot.

that’s it for 2013. i don’t think the above will be too hard to manage. in fact if i do follow them, they could aid our busy-ness. here’s hoping anyway.

what’s on for you in 2013?

season’s greetings!

December 25th, 2012

merry

the end of the year was a big one for me – freelance jobs poured in, projects that where meant to be finished kept going… and going, and took me right up to the very end (i.e this afternoon). frankly i have been too busy to be feel even the slightest bit festive (thank the lawd for online shopping or none of that would have been done either). but finally it hit me today, as i wrapped one thousand presents, baked some strange cookies and was surrounded by a very excited tyke and ari. nothing makes you feel more christmasey than excited children. (except maybe illegal fireworks in the park across the road. that can work too).

it has been a HUGE year for me. biggest by far. so i just wanted to thank-you out there for your support and comments and general good vibes in 2012. it makes what i do worthwhile and feel that extra bit awesome.

hope you enjoy a lovely festive season with your clan. MERRY MERRY to you. see you in 2013. x
